믿음은 조금도 추측과 관련이 없다

“이에 마귀가 예수를 거룩한 성으로 데려다가 성전 꼭대기에 세우고 가로되 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 뛰어 내리라 기록하였으되”

시험은 또다시 “네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든”이라는 의심을 암시하는 말로 시작된다. 그리스도께서는 “만일…이어든”이라는 말에 대답하도록 유혹받았으나 의심을 조금도 받아들이지 않으셨다. 그분은 사단에게 증거하기 위하여 자신의 생명을 위태롭게 하지 않을 것이었다...

믿음은 조금도 추측(推測)과 관련이 없다. 참된 믿음을 가진 자만이 추측하는 일에서 벗어날 수 있다. 추측은 사단의 모조판 믿음이기 때문이다. 믿음은 하나님의 약속을 주장하고 순종의 열매를 맺는다. 추측도 약속을 주장하지만 사단이 그러했듯이 범죄를 변명하기 위하여 그것을 이용한다. 믿음은 우리의 첫 부모들로 하나님의 사랑을 신뢰하고 그분의 명령들을 순종하도록 인도하였을 것이다. 추측은 하나님의 크신 사랑이 그들을 죄의 결과에서 구원해 줄 것이라고 믿게 함으로 하나님의 율법을 어기도록 이끌었다. 은혜를 받을 수 있는 조건들을 따르지 않으면서 하늘의 은총을 요구하는 것은 믿음이 아니다. 참된 믿음은 성경의 약속들과 준비해 놓으신 것들을 기초로 한다.

사단은 불신을 일으키는 일에 실패할 때에 흔히 우리로 추측하도록 이끄는 일에 성공한다. 그는 만일 우리를 스스로 불필요하게 시험의 길에 들어서게 만들 수 있다면 승리는 자신의 것임을 안다. 하나님께서는 순종의 길을 걷는 모든 사람을 지켜주실 것이다. 그러나 그 길을 이탈하는 것은 사단의 영역에 위험을 무릅쓰고 들어서는 것이다. 그 곳에 들어가면 우리는 틀림없이 패배한다. 구주께서는 우리에게 “시험에 들지 않게 깨어있어 기도하라”(막 14：38)고 명하셨다. 묵상과 기도는 위험의 길로 무모하게 들어가지 않도록 우리를 지킬 것이며 많은 패배를 면하게 해 줄 것이다. – 시대의 소망, 124, 126.

But Faith is in No Sense Allied to Presumption

Then the devil taketh Him up into the holy city, and setteth Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto Him, If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down: for it is written,…

But again the temptation is prefaced with the insinuation of distrust, "If Thou be the Son of God." Christ was tempted to answer the "if;" but He refrained from the slightest acceptance of the doubt. He would not imperil His life in order to give evidence to Satan...

c. only he who has true faith is secure against presumption. For presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses them as Satan did, to excuse transgression. Faith would have led our first parents to trust the love of God, and to obey His commands. Presumption led them to transgress His law, believing that His great love would save them from the consequence of their sin. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions on which mercy is to be granted. Genuine faith has its foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures.

Often when Satan has failed of exciting distrust, he succeeds in leading us to presumption. If he can cause us to place ourselves unnecessarily in the way of temptation, he knows that the victory is his. God will preserve all who walk in the path of obedience; but to depart from it is to venture on Satan's ground. There we are sure to fall. The Saviour has bidden us, "Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation." Mark 14:38. Meditation and prayer would keep us from rushing unbidden into the way of danger, and thus we should be saved from many a defeat. – Desires of Ages, 124, 126.
