영생의 소망은 식욕과 정욕을 하나님의 뜻에 복종시키는 데 있다

주께서 당하신 첫 큰 시험에서 배울 모든 교훈 중에서 식욕과 정욕을 지배하는 일과 관련된 것보다 더 중요한 것은 없다. 각 시대를 통하여 육체적 본성에 호소하는 시험이 인류를 부패시키고 타락시키는 데 가장 효과적이었다. 사단은 부절제를 통하여 하나님께서 사람에게 매우 귀중한 선물로 주신 정신적·도덕적 능력을 파괴하려고 활동한다. 이렇게 하여 사람은 영원한 가치가 있는 사물을 인식하지 못하게 된다. 관능적인 방종을 통하여 사단은 사람에게서 하나님을 닮은 모든 흔적들을 지워 버리려고 한다.

그리스도의 초림 당시에 있었던 제어하지 않은 방종과 그 결과로 생기는 질병과 퇴폐는 그리스도의 재림 전에 극심한 죄악과 함께 다시 존재할 것이다. 그리스도께서는, 세상의 형편은 홍수 전의 시대나 소돔과 고모라의 때와 같아질 것이라고 언명하셨다. 마음에 생각하는 모든 상상이 항상 악할 것이다. 우리는 지금 그 두려운 시기의 바로 변두리에 살고 있으므로 구주의 금식의 교훈이 우리의 가슴에 깊이 새겨져야 한다. 우리는 그리스도께서 견디신 말할 수 없는 고통에 의해서만 제어하지 않은 방종의 사악함을 평가할 수 있다. 그분의 모본은, 우리가 영생을 얻는 유일한 소망은 식욕과 정욕을 하나님의 뜻에 복종시키는 데 있다는 것을 말해 준다.

우리 자신의 힘으로는 타락된 우리의 본성의 욕구를 물리칠 수 없다. 사단은 이 통로를 통하여 우리에게 시험을 가져올 것이다. 그리스도께서는 원수가 각 사람에게 와서 인간의 선천적인 약점을 이용하여, 하나님을 신뢰하지 않는 모든 사람을 거짓말로 올무에 빠뜨리려 할 것을 아셨다. 그러므로 우리 주께서는 사람이 걸어가야 할 땅을 먼저 통과하셔서 우리로 하여금 이길 수 있는 길을 마련해 주셨다. – 시대의 소망, 122.

Hope of Eternal Life is through Bringing the Appetites and Passions into Subjection to the Will of God

Of all the lessons to be learned from our Lord's first great temptation none is more important than that bearing upon the control of the appetites and passions. In all ages, temptations appealing to the physical nature have been most effectual in corrupting and degrading mankind. Through intemperance, Satan works to destroy the mental and moral powers that God gave to man as a priceless endowment. Thus it becomes impossible for men to appreciate things of eternal worth. Through sensual indulgence, Satan seeks to blot from the soul every trace of likeness to God.

The uncontrolled indulgence and consequent disease and degradation that existed at Christ's first advent will again exist, with intensity of evil, before His second coming. Christ declares that the condition of the world will be as in the days before the Flood, and as in Sodom and Gomorrah. Every imagination of the thoughts of the heart will be evil continually. Upon the very verge of that fearful time we are now living, and to us should come home the lesson of the Saviour's fast. only by the inexpressible anguish which Christ endured can we estimate the evil of unrestrained indulgence. His example declares that our only hope of eternal life is through bringing the appetites and passions into subjection to the will of God.

In our own strength it is impossible for us to deny the clamors of our fallen nature. Through this channel Satan will bring temptation upon us. Christ knew that the enemy would come to every human being, to take advantage of hereditary weakness, and by his false insinuations to ensnare all whose trust is not in God. And by passing over the ground which man must travel, our Lord has prepared the way for us to overcome. –Desires of Ages, 122.
