LOOKING　DOWN

I say . . . to everyone　who is among you,　not to think of himself　more highly 　han he　ought to think, but to　think soberly.　-Romans 12:3

After I had minor eye surgery, the nurse told me, “Don’t look down for the next 2 weeks. No cooking or cleaning.” The last part of those instructions was a little easier to take than the first part! The incisions needed to heal, and she didn’t want me to put any unnecessary pressure on them by looking down. C. S. Lewis wrote about another kind of looking down that we may have a problem with: “In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. . . . As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you” (Mere Christianity). Jesus told a parable about a Pharisee who felt superior to others. In a prideful prayer, he thanked God that he was not like other men (Luke 18:11). He looked down on extortioners, the unjust, adulterers, and the tax collector who was also praying in the temple. By contrast, the tax collector knew he was a sinner before God and asked for His mercy (v.13). Pride can be an issue for all of us. May we not look down on others but instead see the God who is far above us all. -Anne Cetas

Spiritual pride is the most arrogant of all kinds of pride. 내려다보기 각 사람에게 말하노니…마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품지 말고…지혜롭게 생각하라-로마서 12:3 가벼운 눈 수술이 끝난 후 간호사는 내게 “앞으로 2주 동안 눈을 내려뜨지 말고, 음식을 만들거나 청소를 하지 마세요.”라고 말했습니다. 뒷부분의 지시사항은 첫 번째 것보다는 지키기가 조금 쉬웠습니다. 수술 자국이 아물어야 했으므로 그녀는 내가 아래를 내려다봄으로써 눈에 쓸데없는 압박을 주는 것을 원치 않았습니다. C. S. 루이스는 우리에게 문제가 될 수 있는 다른 종류의 내려다보는 것에 관해서 썼습니다. “어느 관점으로 보건 하나님은 당신과 비교 할 수 없을 만큼 뛰어나신 분이라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그러므로 마음이 교만한 사람은 결코 하나님을 알 수 없습니다. 교만한 사람은 항상 모든 사물과 사람들을 내려다봅니다. 늘 밑을 내려다보고 있는 사람은 당연히 위에 있는 것은 볼 수가 없습니다.”(「순전한 기독교」). 예수님은 다른 사람들보다 자기가 더 낫다고 생각하는 한 바리새인에 관한 비유를 말씀하셨습니다. 교만으로 가득 찬 기도에서 그는 자기가 다른 사람과 같지 않은 것에 감사했습니다(눅 18:11). 그는 토색, 불의, 간음하는 자들, 그리고 성전에서 같이 기도하고 있는 세리를 경멸했습니다. 그에 반해 세리는 자기가 하나님 앞에 죄인이라는 것을 알고 하나님의 자비를 구했습니다(13절). 교만은 우리 모두의 문제일 수 있습니다. 우리가 다른 사람들을 내려다보는 대신, 저 위에 높이 계신 하나님을 보기를 간절히 원합니다. 주 달려 죽은 십자가 우리가 생각할 때에 세상에 속한 욕심을 헛된 줄 알고 버리네 영적인 자만은 모든 종류의 자만 가운데 가장 오만한 것이다.
