염려하고 근심함

그리스도께서 당신의 놀라운 교훈을 주실 때에 존경하는 마음으로 열심히 듣는 마리아는

그리스도의 발 앞에 앉아 있었다.

그 때에 음식 준비하는 일로 당황한 마르다가 예수께 나아와

“주여 내 동생이 나 혼자 일하게 두는 것을 생각지 아니하시나이까

저를 명하사 나를 도와 주라 하소서”라고 말하였다.

“주께서 대답하여 가라사대 마르다야 마르다야 네가 많은 일로 염려하고 근심하나

그러나 몇 가지만 하든지 혹 한 가지만이라도 족하니라

마리아는 이 좋은 편을 택하였으니 빼앗기지 아니하리라 하시니라”(눅 10:41, 42).

마르다에게 필요되는 “한 가지”는

침착하고 헌신적인 정신과 장래와 영생에 관한 지식을 깊이 갈망하는 마음과

영적으로 향상하는 데 필요한 은혜였다.

마르다는 잠시 후에 지나가버릴 일을 위해서 덜 염려하고

영원히 존속하는 일을 위하여 더욱 염려할 필요가 있었다.

.... 그리스도의 사업에는 주의성 깊고 정열적인 일꾼이 필요하다.

마르다와 같은 사람들에게 활동적인 종교 사업에 저희 열심을 다할 넓은 분야가 있다.

그러나 그들로 먼저 마리아처럼 예수의 발 앞에 앉게 하라.

근면과 기민성과 정력이 그리스도의 은혜로 말미암아 성화되게 하라.

그리하면 그 생애는 선을 위한 무적의 능력이 될 것이다.

젊은이들이, 심지어 장년들까지라도 너무도 쉽게 유혹과 죄에 빠지는 이유는

그들이 마땅히 해야 할 만큼 하나님의 말씀을 연구하지 않고 그것을 명상하지 않기 때문이다.
생애와 품성에 나타나는 확고하고 결정적인 의지력의 결핍은 하나님의 말씀의 교훈을 등한히 한 결과이다.

Fretting and Fussing

As Christ gave His wonderful lessons, Mary sat at His feet, a reverent and devoted listener.
On one occasion, Martha, perplexed with the care of preparing the meal, went to Christ, saying, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha, you are fretting and fussing about so many things; but one thing is necessary. The part that Mary has chosen is best; and it shall not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41, 42.

The “one thing” that Martha needed was a calm, devotional spirit, a deeper anxiety for knowledge concerning the future, immortal life, and the graces necessary for spiritual advancement.
She needed less anxiety for the things which pass away, and more for those things which endure forever.

.... There is a wide field for the Marthas, with their zeal in active religious work. But let them first sit with Mary at the feet of Jesus.

Let diligence, promptness, and energy be sanctified by the grace of Christ; then the life will be an unconquerable power for good.

The reason why the youth, and even those of mature years, are so easily led into temptation and sin, is that they do not study the word of God and meditate upon it as they should.
The lack of firm, decided will power, which is manifest in life and character, results from neglect of the sacred instruction of God’s word.
