너희는 세상의 빛이라

너희는 세상의 빛이라

유대인들은 구원의 은혜를 자신의 국가에만 한정된 것으로 생각하였으나

그리스도께서는, 구원은 햇빛과 같다는 것을 그들에게 보이셨다. 

구원은 온 세상에 속한다.

성경을 신봉하는 종교는 책갈피 속이나 교회의 벽 안에 갇혀 있어서는 안 된다.

또한 자신의 유익을 위하여 가끔 끄집어냈다가 조심스럽게 다시 젖혀놓아서도 안 된다.

그것은 매일의 생애를 성결하게 하고

모든 사업상 거래와 모든 사교 관계에서 그 자체를 나타내는 것을 말한다. 

참된 품성은 밖에서 형성되어 장식되는 것이 아니라 속에서 밖으로 발산되는 것이다.

우리가 만일 다른 사람을 의의 길로 인도하기를 원한다면

의의 원칙이 우리 자신의 마음에 자리하지 않으면 안 된다. 

우리는 믿음을 공언함으로 종교의 이론을 선전할 수 있을지는 모르지만

진리의 말씀을 확신시키는 것은 실제적인 경건이다. 

언행이 일치하는 생애, 거룩한 담화, 요동하지 않는 성실성, 능동적이고 동정이 많은 정신, 경건한 모본,

이것들은 빛을 세상에 전달하는 매개물이다.

You Are the Light of the World

The Jews thought to confine the benefits of salvation to their own nation; but Christ showed them that salvation is like the sunshine. 

It belongs to the whole world. The religion of the Bible is not to be confined between the covers of a book, nor within the walls of a church. It is not to be brought out occasionally for our own benefit, and then to be carefully laid aside again. 

It is to sanctify the daily life, to manifest itself in every business transaction and in all our social relations.

True character is not shaped from without, and put on; it radiates from within. 

If we wish to direct others in the path of righteousness, the principles of righteousness must be enshrined in our own hearts. 

Our profession of faith may proclaim the theory of religion, but it is our practical piety that holds forth the word of truth. 

The consistent life, the holy conversation, the unswerving integrity, the active, benevolent spirit, the godly example,—these are the mediums through which light is conveyed to the world.
