하나님께로 가는 두 가지 방법

 “아벨은 자기도 양의 첫 새끼와 그 기름으로 드렸더니 여호와께서 아벨과 그 제물은 열납하셨으나

가인과 그 제물은 열납하지 아니하신지라 가인이 심히 분하여 안색이 변하니”(창 4:4~5). 

가인은 약속된 희생과 희생 제물의 필요성에 대하여 마음속으로 불평과 불신을 품고 하나님 앞에 나아갔다.

그의 봉헌물(奉獻物)에는 죄에 대한 참회가 표시되어 있지 않았다. 

오늘날 많은 사람들이 느끼는 바와같이

그는 하나님께서 세우신 계획 그대로 따르는 것은 연약함을 인정하는 것이 되며

자기 구원을, 약속된 구세주의 속죄에만 전적으로 의존하는 경륜을 곧이곧대로 따르는 것은

연약함을 시인하는 것이 된다고 느꼈다. 

그는 자기 의존의 길을 택하였다. 그는 자기의 공로를 가지고 나오려고 하였다.

그는 양을 가져와서 그 피와 함께 제물을 드리려 하지 않고

자기의 소산, 자기의 노력의 생산물을 드리고자 하였다. 

그는 하나님께 대한 호의의 표시로 자기의 제물을 드렸으며,

이것으로 그는 하나님의 승인을 얻으려고 기대하였다. 

가인은 제단을 쌓고 희생을 가져오는 점에서는 하나님께 순종하였다.

그러나 그는 부분적인 순종만을 드렸다.

가장 요긴한 부분 즉, 구속주의 필요성에 대한 인정을 빼어버렸다. …

가인과 아벨은 종말 때까지 이 세상에 있을 두 부류의 사람들을 대표한다.

한 부류는 죄를 위하여 지정된 희생을 이용하지만 다른 부류는 자신들의 공로를 감히 의지한다.

그들의 제사는 하나님의 중보의 공로가 없는 제사이며,

그렇기 때문에 그것을 사람으로 하나님의 은총을 받을 수 있게 해줄 수 없다. 

예수의 공로를 통하여서만 우리의 죄가 용서받을 수 있다. 

... 그리스도는 우리의 유일한 희망이시다. 

“천하 인간에 구원을 얻을 만한 다른 이름을 우리에게 주신 일이 없”으시다.

“다른 이로서는 구원을 얻을 수 없”(행 4:12)다.

Two Ways to get to God

"And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering: but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell." Genesis 4:4, 5.

Cain came before God with murmuring and infidelity in his heart in regard to the promised sacrifice and the necessity of the sacrificial offerings. His gift expressed no penitence for sin. 

He felt, as many now feel, that it would be an acknowledgement of weakness to follow the exact plan marked out by God, of trusting his salvation wholly to the atonement of the promised Saviour. 

He chose the course of self-dependence. 

He would come in his own merits. 

He would not bring the lamb, and mingle its blood with his offering, but would present his fruits, the products of his labor. 

He presented his offering as a favor done to God, through which he expected to secure the divine approval. Cain obeyed in building an altar, obeyed in bringing a sacrifice, but he rendered only a partial obedience. 

The essential part, the recognition of the need of a Redeemer, was left out...

Cain and Abel represent two classes that will exist in the world till the close of time. one class avail themselves of the appointed sacrifice for sin; the other venture to depend upon their own merits; theirs is a sacrifice without the virtue of divine mediation, and thus it is not able to bring man into favor with God. 

It is only through the merits of Jesus that our transgressions can be pardoned...

... Christ is our only hope. 

“There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” “Neither is there salvation in any other” (Acts 4:12).
