정욕과 식욕의 결정적인 요인

총명한 지혜를 가진 남녀들도,

어떤 종류의 부절제이든 그것으로 말미암아 도덕적 힘이 마비되면

그들의 여러 가지 습관에 있어서 이방 사람들보다 별로 나을 것이 없다.

사단은 항상 사람들을 구원의 빛에서 떠나게 하여

육체적, 정신적, 도덕적 건강에는 개의치 않고 풍속과 유행을 따르도록 한다.

우리의 대적 사단은,

식욕과 정욕이 지배권을 갖게 되면 육체의 건강과 지력은 자기 만족의 제단 위에 희생되고,

사람은 급속히 멸망당할 것을 알고 있다.

계발된 지력이 지배권을 잡아 동물적 습성을 통제하고 그것을 도덕의 기능들 밑에 붙잡아 둔다면,

유혹들을 가지고 정복할 그의 힘이 매우 적어진다는 것을 사단은 잘 알고 있다.

만약 과거 세대의 부모들이 확고한 목적을 가지고 몸을 정신에게 복종시키고

지성이 동물적 정욕의 노예가 되지 못하게 하였다면

오늘날 이 시대에는 전혀 다른 상태의 사람들이 있을 것이다.

사람들에게 식욕을 탐닉하려는 유혹을 저항할 필요성에 대하여 제시하라.

많은 사람들이 바로 여기서 실패한다.

몸과 마음이 얼마나 밀접하게 연관된지를 설명하고,

그 둘을 모두 최선의 상태로 보존할 필요성을 보여 주라.

The Deciding Factor of Passion and Appetite

If men and women of intelligence have their moral powers benumbed through intemperance of any kind, they are, in many of their habits, elevated but little above the heathen.

Satan is constantly drawing the people from saving light to custom and fashion, irrespective of physical, mental, and moral health.

The great enemy knows that if appetite and passion predominate, health of body and strength of intellect are sacrificed upon the altar of self-gratification, and man is brought to speedy ruin.

If enlightened intellect holds the reins, controlling the animal propensities, keeping them in subjection to the moral powers, Satan well knows that his power to overcome with his temptations is very small.

If parents in past generations had, with firmness of purpose, kept the body servant to the mind and had not allowed the intellectual to be enslaved by animal passions, there would be in this age a different order of beings upon the earth.

Present before the people the need of resisting the temptation to indulge appetite. This is where many are failing. Explain how closely body and mind are related and show the need of keeping both in the very best condition.
