굽신거릴 필요가 없음   

 “사무엘이 백성에게 이르되

너희가 내 손에서 아무것도 찾아낸 것이 없음을 여호와께서 너희에게 대하여 증거하시며

그 기름 부음을 받은 자도 오늘날 증거하느니라”(삼상 12:5).  

 세속적 권력과 과시에 대한 만족할 줄 모르는 갈망은

사무엘 시대와 마찬가지로 오늘날도 고치기가 매우 어렵다.

그리스도인들은 세상의 신들만 섬기는 세상 사람들의 관행을 모방하기 위하여

그들처럼 세속적으로 집짓고, 그들처럼 세속적으로 옷입고 싶어한다. 

성경 말씀의 가르침과 그의 종들의 권고와 책망들과 심지어 하나님의 보좌로부터 직접 보내진 경고들까지도 이 무가치한 야망을 진정시킬 힘이 없는 듯하다. 

사람의 마음이 하나님을 떠나면

어떤 구실을 만들어서라도 하나님의 권위를 무시하는 일을 정당화시키게 되며,

하나님의 사업에 어떤 손해를 끼치고라도 교만과 자기 사랑의 마음을 만족시키고자 할 것이다. … 

 가장 유용한 사람들이라도 옳게 평가받기가 그리 쉽지 않다.

동료 인간들을 위해 매우 활동적으로, 또 이기심 없이 일하는 사람들,

큰일을 성취하는 데에 일조를 담당했던 사람들이 무지와 배은망덕을 되돌려 받는 경우가 드물지 않다. 

자기들이 따돌림을 당하고 그 권고의 말씀이 하잘 것 없는 것으로 경멸되는 것을 알았을 때 그들은,

“아, 나는 부당하게 고통을 받구나”하고 생각할지도 모른다. 

성령의 분명한 지시가 아니면

스스로를 정당화시키거나 자신의 결백을 입증할 필요가 없음을 사무엘의 모본을 보고 배우도록 하라.

사명을 마쳐가는 사람에게 주어지는 영예는

이제 막 책임을 지고 아직 시험대에 오르지 않은 사람들이 받는 박수갈채와 축하 인사보다

휠씬 더 가치가 있다.

No Apologies Needed

 And he said unto them, The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. 1 Samuel 12:5.  

 The dissatisfied longing for worldly power and display, is as difficult to cure now as in the days of Samuel. Christians seek to build as worldlings build, to dress as worldlings dress—to imitate the customs and practices of those who worship only the God of this world. 

The instructions of God’s Word, the counsels and reproofs of His servants, and even warnings sent directly from His throne, seem powerless to subdue this unworthy ambition. 

When the heart is estranged from God, almost any pretext is sufficient to justify a disregard of His authority....  

The most useful men are seldom appreciated. Those who have labored most actively and unselfishly for their fellow man, and who have been instrumental in achieving the greatest results, are often repaid with ingratitude and neglect. 

When such men find themselves set aside, their counsels slighted and despised, they may feel that they are suffering great injustice. 

But let them learn from the example of Samuel not to justify or vindicate themselves, unless the Spirit of God unmistakably prompts to such a course. 

The honor accorded him who is concluding his work is of far more worth than the applause and congratulations which those receive who are just entering upon their duties, and who have yet to be tested.
