참된 예배는 그리스도와 함께 일하는 것

수고하는 자가 되는 일, 자아 부정의 노력을 요구하는 선행을 인내로 계속하는 일은

하늘이 미소를 보내는 영광스러운 일이다.

충실한 일은 열렬하고 가장 거룩하다고 생각되는 최상의 예배보다도 더 가납된다.

참된 예배는 그리스도와 함께 일하는 것이다.

기도와 권고와 도움말은 빈번히 나무에 매다는 값싼 열매이다.

그러나 선행 즉 곤핍한 자나 고아와 과부를 돌보는 일은 좋은 나무에서 저절로 자라는 참된 열매이다.

 

하나님 앞에서 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 이것이다.

“곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난 중에 돌아보고 또 자기를 지켜 세속에 물들지 아니하는 이것이니라.”

좋은 열매는 그리스도께서 우리에게 맺으라고 요구하시는 것이다.

선한 말, 자선의 행위, 가난한 자와 고통당하는 자를 동정하는 것이다. 

 

실의와 슬픔으로 눌린 마음을 동정하게 되고, 궁핍한 자에게 나누어 주며, 벗은 자를 입히며,

나그네를 집안에 들이고 마음으로 받아들이면 천사들은 매우 가까이 머물 것이며,

하늘에서는 응답의 선률이 울려퍼질 것이다.

정의와 자비와 자선의 행위는 하늘에서 노래가 된다. 

 

아버지께서는 그 보좌에서부터 자비를 행한 사람들을 보시며 그들을 가장 귀한 보배로 헤아리신다.

“만군의 여호와가 말하노라 내가 나의 보석들을 모을 때에 그들이 나의 것이 될 것이라.”

궁핍한 자와 고통당하는 자를 위해 베푼 자비는 바로 예수께 베푼 것처럼 간주된다.

가난한 자를 구제하고, 고통당하고 압제받는 자를 동정하고, 고아를 가까이 할 때에

그대는 예수와 더 긴밀한 관계에 들어간다.

Working Together With Christ Is True Worship

To become a toiler, to continue patiently in well-doing which calls for self-denying labor, is a glorious work, which Heaven smiles upon. Faithful work is more acceptable to God than the most zealous and thought-to-be holiest worship. It is working together with Christ that is true worship. Prayers, exhortation, and talk are cheap fruits, which are frequently tied on; but fruits that are manifested in good works, in caring for the needy, the fatherless, and widows, are genuine fruits, and grow naturally upon a good tree.

Pure religion and undefiled before the Father is this: “To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” Good deeds are the fruit that Christ requires us to bear: kind words, deeds of benevolence, of tender regard for the poor, the needy, the afflicted. 

When hearts sympathize with hearts burdened with discouragement and grief, when the hand dispenses to the needy, when the naked are clothed, the stranger made welcome to a seat in your parlor and a place in your heart, angels are coming very near, and an answering strain is responded to in heaven. Every act of justice, mercy, and benevolence makes melody in heaven. 

The Father from His throne beholds those who do these acts of mercy, and numbers them with His most precious treasures. “And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels.” Every merciful act to the needy, the suffering, is regarded as though done to Jesus. When you succor the poor, sympathize with the afflicted and oppressed, and befriend the orphan, you bring yourselves into a closer relationship to Jesus.
