마음을 지배함

 

침묵에는 놀라운 능력이 있다.

참을 수 없는 말을 들을 때에 보복하지 말라.

성난 사람에게 대꾸하는 말은, 대개는 분노를 열화처럼 타오르게 하는 채찍질과 같이 작용한다.

 

그러나 침묵으로 대응할 때 분노는 급속히 사라진다.

그리스도인은 자기의 혀를 재갈 먹이고

사납고 참지 못하는 말은 하지 않기로 굳게 결심하여야 한다.

혀를 재갈 먹인 사람은 통과하도록 부름을 받은 모든 인내의 시험에 승리할 수 있을 것이다.

 

사람은 자신의 힘으로는 자기의 정신을 다스리지 못한다.

그러나 그리스도를 통하여 사람은 자제할 수 있다.

주의 능력으로 인간은 그의 생각과 말을 하나님의 뜻에 복종시킬 수 있다.

그리스도의 신앙은 정서를 의지의 지배 아래 두고 혀를 훈련시킨다.

그 신앙의 감화력 아래서 급한 분노는 가라앉고 마음은 인내와 온유로 가득 찬다.

 

하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 가지신 분을 굳게 붙잡으라.

비록 그대들이 여러번 인내와 침착을 나타내는데 실패한다 할지라도 싸움을 단념하지 말라.

새로운 결심을 가져라. 이번에는 어떤 도발에도 인내하기로 더 굳게 결심하라.

그리고 그대의 눈을 거룩한 모본자이신 예수에게서 결코 떼지 말라.

Ruling the Spirit

There is a wonderful power in silence. When impatient words are spoken to you, do not retaliate.

Words spoken in reply to one who is angry usually act as a whip, lashing the temper into greater fury. But anger met by silence quickly dies away. Let the Christian bridle his tongue, firmly resolving not to speak harsh, impatient words. With the tongue bridled, he may be victorious in every trial of patience through which he is called to pass.

In his own strength man cannot rule his spirit. But through Christ he may gain self-control. In His strength he may bring his thoughts and words into subjection to the will of God. The religion of Christ brings the emotions under the control of reason and disciplines the tongue. Under its influence the hasty temper is subdued, and the heart is filled with patience and gentleness.

Hold firmly to the one who has all power in heaven and in earth. Though you so often fail to reveal patience and calmness, do not give up the struggle. Resolve again, this time more firmly, to be patient under every provocation. And never take your eyes off your divine Example.
