기질은 수정될 수 있음

주님께서 사람들에게 그들의 숨겨진 결점들을 드러내시는 것은 자비하시기 때문이다.

그분은 그들이 자신의 심령의 복잡한 감정들과 동기들을 비평적으로 살피고,

그릇된 것을 탐지해내고, 기질을 수정하고 그 태도를 세련되게 하기를 원하신다.

하나님께서는 그분의 종들이 자신들의 심령을 익히 알게 되기를 원하신다.

하나님께서는 그들의 참된 상태를 알리시고자 고난의 불이 공격하도록 허락하셔서

그들이 정결케 될 수 있도록 하신다.

 

명랑함과 고결함을 결합시킴—

예수를 믿는 신앙은 아무리 완고하고 거친 성격도 유순하게 만들며,

행실이 아무리 우악스럽고 날카로울지라도 상냥하게 만든다.

또한, 말과 태도를 온순하고 우아하게 만든다.

그리스도에게서 순결하고 고결한 정신과 명랑한 기질을 결합시키는 법을 배우도록 하자.

그리스도인의 친절과 예의는 그리스도교를 옹호하는 가장 힘있는 논증이다.

Dispositions May Be Modified

It is in mercy that the Lord reveals to men their hidden defects. He would have them critically examine the complicated emotions and motives of their own hearts and detect that which is wrong, modify their dispositions, and refine their manners. God would have His servants become acquainted with their own hearts. In order to bring to them a true knowledge of their condition, He permits the fire of affliction to assail them so that they may be purified.

Combining Sunniness and Integrity—The religion of Jesus softens whatever is hard and rough in the temper and smooths whatever is rugged and sharp in the manners. It makes the words gentle and the demeanor winning. Let us learn from Christ how to combine a high sense of purity and integrity with sunniness of disposition. A kind, courteous Christian is the most powerful argument that can be produced in favor of Christianity.
