땅에 있는 지체를 죽이라

 

영적인 왕국에 들어가고자 결심한 사람은

흑암의 왕국 군대의 지원을 받는 온갖 거듭나지 않은 성질의 세력들과 분노가

그를 대적하고 있다는 사실을 발견할 것이다.

날마다 그는 헌신을 새롭게 하고 날마다 악과 맞서 싸워야 한다.

옛 습관들, 악으로 기울어지는 유전적 기질은 언제나 지배권을 쥐려고 분투할 것이다.

이것들에 대하여 그리스도인은 언제나 경계하여야 하며

그리스도의 능력으로 승리하고자 분투 노력해야 한다.

 

 

바울은 골로새인들에게 다음과 같이 편지하였다.

“그러므로 땅에 있는 지체를 죽이라”,

“너희도 전에 그 가운데 살 때에는 그 가운데서 행하였으나

이제는 너희가 이 모든 것을 벗어 버리라 곧 분과 악의와 훼방과 너희 입의 부끄러운 말이라”,

“그러므로 너희는 하나님의 택하신 거룩하고 사랑하신 자처럼

긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음을 옷 입고

누가 뉘게 혐의가 있거든 서로 용납하여 피차 용서하되

주께서 너희를 용서하신 것과 같이 너희도 그리하고 이 모든 것 위에 사랑을 더하라

이는 온전하게 매는 띠니라

그리스도의 평강이 너희 마음을 주장하게 하라

평강을 위하여 너희가 한 몸으로 부르심을 받았나니 또한 너희는 감사하는 자가 되라.”

 

 

골로새인들에게 보내는 편지는

그리스도를 섬기는 데 종사하는 모든 사람들에게 매우 귀중한 공과들,

즉 구주를 옳게 대표하는 사람의 생애에서 볼 수 있는

목적의 단일성과 목표의 고상함을 보여 주는 교훈으로 가득 차 있다.

 

 

신자는 하늘가는 길을 향하여 전진하는 것을 방해하거나

다른 사람들의 발을 좁은 길에서 떠나게 하는 모든 것을 버리고

매일의 생애에서 자비와 친절과 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음과 그리스도의 사랑을 나타내야 한다.

Mortify Your Members Which Are Upon The Earth

 

He who has determined to enter the spiritual kingdom will find that all the powers and passions of unregenerate nature, backed by the forces of the kingdom of darkness, are arrayed against him. Each day he must renew his consecration, each day do battle with evil. Old habits, hereditary tendencies to wrong, will strive for the mastery, and against these he is to be ever on guard, striving in Christ’s strength for victory.    

                                

 “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth,” Paul wrote to the Colossians; “in the which ye also walked sometime, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.... Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”

 

The letter to the Colossians is filled with lessons of highest value to all who are engaged in the service of Christ, lessons that show the singleness of purpose and the loftiness of aim which will be seen in the life of him who rightly represents the Savior. Renouncing all that would hinder him from making progress in the upward way or that would turn the feet of another from the narrow path, the believer will reveal in his daily life mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, forbearance, and the love of Christ.
