믿음과 행함

 

Faith and Works

 

No man can rightly present the law of God without the gospel,

or the gospel without the law.

 

누구든지 복음이 없이는 하나님의 율법을 올바로 드러낼 수 없으며,

또한 율법이 없이는 복음을 바르게 드러낼수 없다. 

 

The law is the gospel embodied, and the gospel is the law unfolded.

The law is the root, the gospel is the fragrant blossom and fruit which it bears.

 

율법은 구체화된 복음이며 복음은 율법을 펼쳐 놓은 것이다.

다시 말하면 율법은 뿌리가 되고 복음은 향기 나는 꽃과 그 꽃이 맺는 열매이다.

 

There are many who fail to understand the relation of faith and works.

They say,

“Only believe in Christ, and you are safe.

You have nothing to do with keeping the law.”

 

믿음과 행함의 관계를 이해하지 못하는 사람들이 많다.

그들은 말하기를

“그리스도를 믿기만 하라 그러면 그대는 안전하다.

그대는 율법을 지킬 필요가 없다”라고 말한다.

 

But genuine faith will be manifest in obedience.

 

그러나 진정한 믿음은 순종을 통해 나타날 것이다.

 

Said Christ to the unbelieving Jews,

“If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” John 8:39.

And concerning the father of the faithful the Lord declares,

“Abraham obeyed My voice,

and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” Genesis 26:5.

 

그리스도께서는 믿지 않는 유대인들에게

“너희가 아브라함의 자손이면 아브라함의 행사를 할 것이”(요 8:39)라고 말씀하셨다.

그리고 충실한 자들의 조상에 관하여 주께서는

“아브라함이 내 말을 순종하고 내 명령과 내 계명과 내 율례와 내 법도를 지켰음이니라”(창 26:5)고

선언하신다.

 

 

Says the apostle James,

“Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” James 2:17.

And John, who dwells so fully upon love, tells us,

“This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.” 1 John 5:3.

 

사도 야고보는 “행함이 없는 믿음은 그 자체가 죽은 것이라”(약 2:17)고 말한다.

그리고 그처럼 철저하게 사랑을 강조한 요한은 우리에게

“하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이것이니 우리가 그의 계명을 지키는 것이라”(요일 5:3)고 말한다.
