DISASTER DIARIES

His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. -Lamentations 3:22-23

Yves Congar was just 10 years old when World War I began and the French town where he lived was invaded by the German army. His mother encouraged him to keep a diary, and what resulted was a lucid description of a military occupation, complete with written narrative and colored sketches. His diary recorded a disaster from a child’s perspective. What he witnessed had such a profound effect on him that he felt called to bring others the hope of Christ. Centuries earlier the prophet Jeremiah was an eyewitness to the invasion of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar. He wrote down his observations in his “diary”─the book of Lamentations. Despite these distressing times, the prophet found hope in the heart of God. He wrote: “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (3:22-23). At various times, we may experience or witness disasters that feel like hostile forces entering our lives. But these times of trouble do not last forever. And, like Jeremiah, our most sustaining hope is to reflect upon the faithfulness and provision of our heavenly Father. 여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로… 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다-예레미야애가 3:22-23

제1차 세계대전이 발발했을 때, 독일군이 침공했던 프랑스의 한 마을에 이브스 콩가라는 10살 난 소년이 살고 있었습니다. 이브스의 어머니는 그에게 일기를 쓰라고 권했었는데, 그 결과 독일군 점령기에 관한 상세한 내용이 천연색 그림과 함께 일기에 남아 있습니다. 그 일기는 한 소년의 눈에 비친 재난을 기록하고 있습니다. 그가 목격한 일들은 그에게 지대한 영향을 끼쳤고, 그로 하여금 다른 사람들에게 그리스도의 소망을 심어주어야겠다는 소명을 갖도록 하였습니다. 이보다 훨씬 오래 전에 예레미야 선지자는 느부갓네살이 예루살렘을 침공하는 것을 목격했습니다. 그 때 목격한 것을 ‘일기’에 담은 것이 예레미야애가입니다. 고통스러운 세월이었음에도 불구하고, 그 선지자는 하나님의 심정 가운데서 희망을 발견하여 다음과 같이 기록하였습니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다. 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다” (3:22-23). 수시로 우리는 적대 세력이 우리의 삶속에 들어오는 것과 같은 재난을 경험하거나 목격합니다. 그러나 이런 고통의 시기는 영원히 지속되지 않습니다. 그리고 우리를 가장 잘 견디게 해주는 희망은 예레미야처럼 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지의 신실하심과 채워주심을 생각하는 것입니다. 하나님의 자비는 아침마다 새로우며 주의 신실하심은 아주 큽니다!

오 신실하신 주! 오 신실하신 주! 날마다 자비를 베푸시네 일용할 모든 것 내려주시니 오 신실하신 주 나의 구주!

희망을 가질 수 있는 가장 큰 이유는 하나님의 신실하심이다.
