그리스도에게 가장 가까이 설 사람

 

그리스도에게 가장 가까이 설 사람은 이 땅에서 그리스도의 자기희생적인 사랑 즉

“자랑하지 아니하며 교만하지 아니하며…자기의 유익을 구치 아니하며 성내지 아니하며

악한 것을 생각하지 아니”(고전 13：4, 5)하는 사랑,

마치 우리 주님을 움직였듯이 제자들로 하여금 인간을 구원하기 위하여 죽기까지

모든 것을 주고 생애하고 수고하고 희생하게 한 사랑의 정신을 가장 깊이 체득할 자들이 될 것이다.

이 정신이 바울의 생애 가운데 명백히 나타났다.

바울은 “내게 사는 것이 그리스도”라고 말하였다.

왜냐하면 그의 생애는 사람들에게 그리스도를 나타냈기 때문이다.

그는 그리스도를 얻기 위하여 “죽는 것도 유익함이니라”고 말하였다.

죽음 그 자체도 그리스도의 은혜의 능력을 나타낼 것이었으며 영혼들을 그에게로 모을 것이었다.

바울은 “살든지 죽든지 내 몸에 그리스도가 존귀히 되게 하려”(빌 1：21, 20) 한다고 말하였다.

The one Who Stands Nearest To Christ

The one who stands nearest to Christ will be he who on earth has drunk most deeply of the spirit of His self-sacrificing love,--love that "vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, . . . seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil" (1 Cor. 13:4, 5),--love that moves the disciple, as it moved our Lord, to give all, to live and labor and sacrifice, even unto death, for the saving of humanity.

This spirit was made manifest in the life of Paul. He said, "For to me to live is Christ;" for his life revealed Christ to men; "and to die is gain,"--gain to Christ; death itself would make manifest the power of His grace, and gather souls to Him. "Christ shall be magnified in my body," he said, "whether it be by life or by death." Phil. 1:21, 20.
