SUNRISE

Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight.” -Exodus 3:3

There was a magnificent sunrise this morning, but I was too busy to enjoy it. I turned away and became preoccupied with other things. I thought about that sunrise a few moments ago, and I realize I lost an opportunity for worship this morning. In the midst of the busyness and stresses of our days, there are patches of beauty all around us, glimpses of God’s goodness that we catch here and there along the way. These are the places in the walls of the universe where heaven is breaking through-if only we will take the time to stop and to reflect upon God’s love for us. What if Moses had taken only a fleeting glance at the bush that was burning but “was not consumed” (Ex. 3:2). What if he had ignored it and hurried on to other things? (He had those sheep to take care of, you know, and important work to do.) He would have missed an epic, lifechanging encoun-ter with the living God (vv.4-12). Sometimes in life we must hurry. But overall, life should be less hurrying and more noticing. Life is the present. Life is being aware; it is seeing God’s love breaking through. It is turning aside to the miracle of something like a sunrise. Something transitory, yet symbolic of the eternity that awaits us. -David Roper

해돋이

이에 모세가 이르되 내가 돌이켜 가서 이 큰 광경을 보리라-출애굽기 3:3

오늘 아침 해돋이는 정말 아름다웠지만, 너무 바쁘다보니 그것을 감상할 시간이 없었습니다. 그래서 돌아서서 다른 일에 열중했습니다. 그런데 조금 전의 그 해돋이를 생각해보니, 오늘 아침 하나님을 경배할 기회를 놓쳤다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 우리는 일상을 분주함과 스트레스 가운데 보내고 있지만, 우리 주변에는 하나님의 선하심을 볼 수 있는 아름다운 광경들이 여기저기에 펼쳐져 있습니다. 우리가 잠시 일손을 멈추고 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 생각해보면, 우리가 사는 세계에는 천국을 보여주는 이런 광경들이 많이 있습니다. 만일 모세가 불은 붙었지만 “타지 않는” 떨기나무를 힐끔 보기만 하고 그냥 지나쳤다면 어떻게 되었을까요?(출 3:2). 만약 모세가 떨기나무를 무시하고 다른 일을 하려고 서둘렀다면 어떻게 되었을까요? (알다시피 그에게는 돌봐야할 양들이 있었고, 또 해야 할 중요한 일들이 있었습니다.) 그랬다면 그는 위대한 사건, 즉 그의 삶을 완전히 바꾸게 될 살아 계신 하나님과의 만남을 놓쳤을 것입니다(4-12절). 살다보면 서둘러야만 할 때가 있습니다. 그러나 전반적으로 볼 때, 우리는 서두르는 것을 줄이고 주의를 더 기울여야 합니다. 삶은 현재입니다. 삶은 인식하는 것입니다. 이곳저곳에 드러나 있는 하나님의 사랑을 눈으로 보는 것입니다. 그것은 해돋이와 같은 기적을 바라보기 위해 돌아서는 것입니다. 일시적인 것이기는 하지만, 우리를 기다리는 영원을 상징하는 것들을 바라보는 것입니다.

내 눈을 열어 나를 향한 주님의 진리를 보게 하소서 나를 풀어 자유롭게 할 그 놀라운 열쇠를 손에 쥐게 하소서

주여, 우리의 눈을 열어 주님을 보게 하소서.
