자기를 십자가에 못 박는 것

 

예수께서는 이제 당신의 희생의 생애가 제자들이 따라야 할 생애의 모본이 됨을

그들에게 설명하셨다. 근처에서 서성거리고 있던 사람들을 제자들과 함께 가까이 부르고

“아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고, 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라”고

말씀하셨다.

 

십자가는 로마의 세력을 연상시켰다. 십자가는 가장 잔인하고 굴욕적인 형태의 사형 기구였다.

가장 저열한 죄수는 사형 장소까지 십자가를 지고 가도록 되어 있었다.

그리고 종종 그들의 어깨에 십자가를 메게 할 때에는 굴복 당할 때까지 광포하게 항거하다가

마침내 그 고문의 기구가 그들에게 메워지곤 했다.

그런데 예수께서 당신을 따르는 자들에게 십자가를 지고 자기를 따라오라고 명령하신 것이다.

 

그분의 말씀은 제자들에게 비록 희미하게 밖에는 이해되지 않았지만

가장 치욕적인 수욕, 곧 그리스도를 위하여 죽기까지 그들이 복종해야 할 것을 지적하신 것이었다. 이 말씀보다 더 완전한 자아 포기를 묘사한 말씀은 있을 수 없었다.

그러나 그분께서는 이 모든 것을 그들을 위하여 받으셨다.

예수께서는 우리가 잃어버린 상태에 있을 동안에는 하늘을 계실만한 곳으로 여기지 않으셨다.

그분은 비난과 모욕의 생애를, 그리고 치욕의 죽음을 당하기 위하여 하늘 궁정을 떠나셨다.

값을 헤아릴 수 없는 하늘 보화로 부요하던 그분이 가난하게 되신 것은

당신의 가난으로 말미암아 우리로 부요하게 하시기 위함이었다.

우리는 예수께서 걸어가신 길을 따라가야 한다.

 

그리스도께서 위하여 돌아가신 사람들을 사랑하는 것은 곧 자기를 십자가에 못 박는 것을 의미한다. 하나님의 자녀가 된 자는 자신을, 세상을 구하기 위하여 내려진 사슬의 한 고리로서,

잃은 자를 찾아 구원하기 위하여 그분과 함께 행군하는, 자비의 경륜에 참여하여

그리스도와 하나가 된 자로 여길 것이다.

 

그리스도인은 자신을 하나님께 바쳤다는 것과,

품성으로 세상에 그리스도를 나타내야 한다는 것을 항상 인식해야 한다.

그리스도의 생애 가운데 나타난 자기희생, 동정, 사랑이

하나님의 일꾼의 생애에서 재현(再現)되어야 한다.

 

Crucifixion of Self

 

Jesus now explained to His disciples that His own life of self-abnegation was an example of what theirs should be. Calling about Him, with the disciples, the people who had been lingering near, He said, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” The cross was associated with the power of Rome. It was the instrument of the most cruel and humiliating form of death. The lowest criminals were required to bear the cross to the place of execution; and often as it was about to be laid upon their shoulders, they resisted with desperate violence, until they were overpowered, and the instrument of torture was bound upon them.

But Jesus bade His followers take up the cross and bear it after Him. To the disciples His words, though dimly comprehended, pointed to their submission to the most bitter humiliation,—submission even unto death for the sake of Christ. No more complete self-surrender could the Saviour’s words have pictured. But all this He had accepted for them. Jesus did not count heaven a place to be desired while we were lost. He left the heavenly courts for a life of reproach and insult, and a death of shame. He who was rich in heaven’s priceless treasure, became poor, that through His poverty we might be rich. We are to follow in the path He trod.

Love for souls for whom Christ died means crucifixion of self. He who is a child of God should henceforth look upon himself as a link in the chain let down to save the world, one with Christ in His plan of mercy, going forth with Him to seek and save the lost.

 

The Christian is ever to realize that he has consecrated himself to God, and that in character he is to reveal Christ to the world.

The self-sacrifice, the sympathy, the love, manifested in the life of Christ are to reappear in the life of the worker for God.
