알콜이 미치는 나쁜 영향

취하게 하는 술의 희생자가 된 사람의 타락상과 노예적 상태를 인간의 손으로 이보다 더 생생하게 묘사한 적은 결코 없었다. 노예 상태가 되고 타락한 나머지, 심지어 그의 불행을 깨닫고 있을지라도 그는 그 사슬에서 벗어날 힘이 없다. 그는 “다시 술을 찾겠다”(35절)고 한다.

알콜이 주정뱅이에게 미치는 나쁜 영향을 보여 주기 위해 논쟁할 필요조차 없다. 그리스도께서 그들을 위하여 돌아가셨고, 천사들이 그들의 불행을 보고 우는 그 사람들이 술에 취하여 몽롱하게 된 참상을 어느 곳에서나 볼 수 있다. 그들은 자랑스러운 우리의 문명에 오점이 되고 있다. 그들은 어느 곳에서나 수치와 저주와 위험 인물이 되고 있다.

그리고 주정뱅이의 가정에 숨겨져 있는 불행과 번민과 절망을 누가 묘사할 수 있을 것인가? 흔히 곱게 자라나서 감정이 풍부하고, 교양이 있고, 세련된 아내가 술 때문에 주정뱅이와 마귀로 바뀌어진 사람에게 예속되어 있는 것을 생각해 보라. 가정의 안락과 교육과 훈육을 박탈당하고, 그들의 자랑과 보호가 되어주어야 할 사람에 대한 공포 속에서 살아가다가, 수치의 낙인이 찍히고 때로는 저주스러운 주정뱅이의 욕구라는 유전까지 받아서 세상으로 밀려나오는 아이들을 생각해 보라.

술의 영향으로 매일 일어나고 있는 무서운 사고들을 생각해 보라. 어떤 기차의 승무원은 신호에 유의하는 일을 무시하거나 명령을 오해한다. 기차가 가는 도중에 충돌 사고가 생겨 많은 생명을 잃어버린다. 혹은 기선이 좌초하여 승객들과 승무원들이 수장된다. 그 사건의 원인을 조사하여 보면 중요한 위치에 있는 사람이 음주의 영향을 받고 있었음이 판명된다. 술을 마시는 습관이 어느 정도이면 사람의 생명을 안전하게 맡길 수 있겠는가? 그 사람이 전혀 술을 마시지 않을 때에만 맡길 수 있다. – 시대의 소망, 148-150.

The Evil Effects of Intoxicants

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder." Proverbs 20:1 ; 23 129-32.

Never was traced by human hand a more vivid picture of the debasement and the slavery of trie victim of intoxicating drink. Enthralled, degraded, even when awakened to a sense of his misery, he has no power to break from the snare; he "will seek it yet again” Proverbs 23:35.

No argument is needed to show the evil effects of intoxicants on the drunkard. The bleared, besotted wrecks of humanity souls for whom Christ died, and over whom angels weep are everywhere. They are a blot on our boasted civilization. They are the shame and curse and peril of every land.

And who can picture the wretchedness, the agony, the despair, that are hidden in the drunkard's home? Think of the wife, often delicately reared, sensitive, cultured, and refined, linked to one whom drink transforms into a sot or a demon. Think of the children, robbed of home comforts, education, and training, living in terror of him who should be their pride and protection, thrust into the world, bearing the brand of shame, often with the hereditary curse of the drunkard's thirst.

Think of the frightful accidents that are every day occurring through the influence of drink. Some official on a railway train neglects to heed a signal, or misinterprets an order. on goes the train; there is a collision, and many lives are lost. Or a steamer is run aground, and passengers and crew find a watery grave. When the matter is investigated, it is found that someone at an important post was under the influence of drink. To what extent can one indulge the liquor habit and be safely trusted with the lives of human beings? He can be trusted only as he totally abstains. – Home and Health, 148-150.
