하늘이 위대하게 평가하는 것

하늘이 위대하게 평가하는 것은 무엇인가? 그것은 세상이 크게 여기는 것 곧 그들이 가치 있게 생각하는 부나, 지위나, 훌륭한 가문이나, 지적 선물이 아니다. 만일 보다 더 고상한 어떤 것들을 고려함 없이 지적 위대함이 영예를 받을 만한 것이라면 우리의 경의는 그 누구도 그에 필적할 만한 지능을 갖지 못했던 사단에게 돌려야 한다. 그러나 자기를 섬기는 데 악용될 때에 그 선물이 크면 클수록 그 저주도 크게 된다.

하나님께서 높이 평가하시는 것은 도덕적인 가치이다. 사랑과 순결이 하나님께서 가장 귀중히 여기시는 속성이다. 요한이, 산헤드린이 파견한 사자들 앞에서나 백성들 앞에서나, 자신의 제자들 앞에서 자신의 영예를 구하지 않고 모든 사람에게 예수님을 약속하신 분으로서 가리켰을 때 그는 하나님 보시기에 위대하였다. 그리스도의 봉사를 보고 느낀 그의 이기심 없는 기쁨은 일찍이 사람이 나타낸 것 중에서 가장 숭고한 형태의 기쁨을 보여 준다. – 시대의 소망, 219.

Greatness in the Estimation of Heaven

In the estimation of Heaven, what is it that constitutes greatness? Not that which the world accounts greatness; not wealth, or rank, or noble descent, or intellectual gifts, in themselves considered. If intellectual greatness, apart from any higher consideration, is worthy of honor, then our homage is due to Satan, whose intellectual power no man has ever equaled. But when perverted to self-serving, the greater the gift, the greater curse it becomes.

It is moral worth that God values. Love and purity are the attributes He prizes most. John was great in the sight of the Lord, when, before the messengers from the Sanhedrin, before the people, and before his own disciples, he refrained from seeking honor for himself, but pointed all to Jesus as the Promised one. His unselfish joy in the ministry of Christ presents the highest type of nobility ever revealed in man. – Desires of Ages, 219.
