상황이나 자신의 약점을 보지 말고 하나님의 말씀의 능력을 바라보라

예수께서는 “이 세상 임금이 오겠음이라 그러나 저는 내게 관계할 것이 없”(요 14：30)다고 말씀하셨다. 그분 안에 있는 어떤 것도 사단의 궤변에 반응하지 않았다. 그분은 죄를 짓기로 동의하지 않으셨다. 그분은 생각으로라도 시험에 굴복하지 않으셨다. 우리도 그렇게 할 수 있다. 그리스도의 인성은 신성과 연합되었다. 그분은 성령의 내재하심으로 투쟁할 태세가 되어 있으셨다. 그분은 우리로 신의 성품에 참여하는 자가 되게 하기 위하여 오셨다. 우리가 믿음으로 그분과 연합하는 한 죄는 더 이상 우리를 지배하지 못한다. 하나님께서는 우리 안에 있는 믿음의 손을 인도하여 그리스도의 신성을 굳게 붙잡게 함으로 우리로 완전한 품성을 얻게 하려고 하신다.

그런데 이 일을 성취하는 방법을 그리스도께서 우리에게 보여 주셨다. 그분은 어떤 수단을 통하여 사단과의 투쟁에서 승리하셨는가? 하나님의 말씀을 통해서였다. 그분은 오로지 하나님의 말씀으로만 시험에 대항하실 수 있었다. “기록되었으되” 라고 그분은 말씀하셨다. “그 보배롭고 지극히 큰 약속을 우리에게 주사 이 약속으로 말미암아 너희로 정욕을 인하여 세상에서 썩어질 것을 피하여 신의 성품에 참여하는 자가 되게 하셨”(벧후 1：4)다. 하나님의 말씀 가운데 있는 약속은 모두 우리의 것이다. 우리는 “하나님의 입으로 나오는 모든 말씀으로” 살아야 한다. 시험의 맹공격을 받을 때, 상황이나 자신의 약점을 보지 말고 하나님의 말씀의 능력을 바라보라. 그 말씀의 모든 능력은 그대의 것이다. 시편 기자는 이렇게 말한다. “내가 주께 범죄치 아니하려 하여 주의 말씀을 내 마음에 두었나이다”, “나는 주의 입술의 말씀을 좇아 스스로 삼가서 강포한 자의 길에 행치 아니하였사오며”(시 119：11, 17：4). – 시대의 소망, 123.

Look Not to Circumstances or to the Weakness of Self, But to the Power of the Word

"The prince of this world cometh," said Jesus, "and hath nothing in Me." John 14:30. There was in Him nothing that responded to Satan's sophistry. He did not consent to sin. Not even by a thought did He yield to temptation. So it may be with us. Christ's humanity was united with divinity; He was fitted for the conflict by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And He came to make us partakers of the divine nature. So long as we are united to Him by faith, sin has no more dominion over us. God reaches for the hand of faith in us to direct it to lay fast hold upon the divinity of Christ, that we may attain to perfection of character.

And how this is accomplished, Christ has shown us. By what means did He overcome in the conflict with Satan? By the word of God. only by the word could He resist temptation. "It is written," He said. And unto us are given "exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." 2 Peter 1:4. Every promise in God's word is ours. "By every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" are we to live. When assailed by temptation, look not to circumstances or to the weakness of self, but to the power of the word. All its strength is yours. "Thy word," says the psalmist, "have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee." "By the word of Thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer." Ps. 119:11; 17:4. – Desires of Ages, 123.
