세속적 원칙과 관습에 따르지 말라

그리스도인들도 옛날 이스라엘 백성들처럼

너무나 자주 경건치 않은 자들의 우정을 얻기 위하여 세속적 영향에 굴복하고 그들의 원칙과 습관을 따른다. 그러나 결국에는 친구라고 공언하던 자들이 가장 위험한 원수임이 드러날 것이다.

성경은 하나님의 백성과 세상 사이에는 조화가 있을 수 없다고 가르친다.

우리 구주께서는 “형제들아 세상이 너희를 미워하거든 이상히 여기지 말라”,

“너희보다 먼저 나를 미워한 줄을 알라”(요일 3: 13; 요 15: 18)라고 말씀하셨다. 

사탄은 경건치 않은 자들을 통하여 우정이란 가면을 쓰고 하나님의 백성을 죄 가운데로 유혹하여

그들을 하나님과 분리시키려고 공작한다.

그들의 보호막이 제거될 때에 사탄은 그의 하수인들로 하여금

그들을 대항하게 하고 그들을 완전히 파멸시키려고 노력한다.

하나님의 진리는 그분의 백성이 개인적 경험 가운데 실행하지 않았기 때문에 그들 중에 높임을 받지 못했다. 그들은 세상을 따르며, 그들의 영향을 보존하기 위해 세상에 의존한다.

그들은 세상이 그들을 변화시키도록 허용하며,

세상의 포준에 맞추기 위해 그들의 사업에 신성한 불 대신에 보통의 불을 도입한다.

세상의 관습을 흉내내려는 노력을 해서는 안 된다. 이것은 신성한 불이 아니라 다른 불이다.

산 떡은 감탄으로 끝날 것이 아니라 먹어야 한다.

하늘에서 내려오는 그 떡은 영혼에게 생명을 줄 것이다.

이것은 품성의 모든 요소를 흡수하여 그리스도의 품성과 하나가 되도록 하고,

좋지 못한, 선천적 및 후천적 경향들을 하나님의 형상대로 빚는다.

Conform Not in Principles and Customs

Like Israel, Christians too often yield to the influence of the world and conform to its principles and customs in order to secure the friendship of the ungodly, but in the end it will be found that these professed friends are the most dangerous of foes.

The Bible plainly teaches that there can be no harmony between the people of God and the world. “Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you” (1 John 3:13). Our Saviour says, “You know that it hated Me before it hated you” (John 15:18). 

Satan works through the ungodly, under cover of a pretended friendship, to allure God’s people into sin that he may separate them from Him; and when their defense is removed, then he will lead his agents to turn against them and seek to accomplish their destruction.

The truth of God has not been magnified in His believing people because they have not brought it into their personal experience. They conform to the world and depend upon it for their influence. They allow the world to convert them and introduce the common fire to take the place of the sacred that they may, in their line of work, meet the world’s standard.

There must not be these efforts made to ape the world’s customs. This is common, not sacred, fire. The living bread must not only be admired, but eaten. That bread which cometh down from heaven will give life to the soul. It is the leaven which absorbs all the elements of the character into a oneness with the character of Christ and molds the objectionable hereditary and cultivated tendencies after the divine similitude.
