그리스도인의 생애는 하나의 싸움

그리스도인의 생애는 하나의 싸움이며 진군이다.

그러나 얻어야 할 승리는 인간의 힘으로 얻어지지 않는다.

싸움의 장소는 곧 마음이다.

우리가 싸워야 할 싸움, 인류가 지금껏 싸운 가장 큰 싸움은

자아를 하나님의 뜻에 굴복시키는 것, 곧 마음을 사랑의 주권에 바치는 것이다. 

혈통으로나 육정으로 난 옛 본성으로는 하나님의 나라를 유업으로 받을 수 없다.

유전적 성향 곧 이전 습관을 버리지 않으면 안 된다.

영적 왕국에 들어가려고 하는 사람은 암흑의 왕국의 세력을 등에 업고 있는,

거듭나지 않은 본성에서 나오는 모든 능력과 정욕이 자신을 대항하여 싸우고 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 될 것이다. 이기심과 교만은, 저희를 죄악적인 것으로 지적해 주는 것은 무엇이나 대항하여 싸우게 될 것이다. 

우리는 지배권을 쟁취하기 위해 애쓰는 악한 욕망과 습관을 스스로의 힘으로 이길 수 없다.

우리는 우리를 속박하고 있는 강력한 원수를 정복할 수 없다.

오직 하나님께서만 우리에게 승리를 주실 수 있다. 

그분께서는 우리가 자아와 또 자신의 의지와 습관을 정복하기를 바라신다.

그러나 그분께서는 우리의 동의와 협력이 없으면 우리 속에서 역사하실 수 없다.

성령은 사람에게 주어진 기능과 능력을 통하여 일하신다.

우리의 정력은 하나님과 협력하도록 요구받고 있다. 

매 발걸음마다 열렬히 기도하며 자아를 낮추는 일 없이는 승리를 얻을 수 없다.

우리의 의지가 하나님의 능력에 억지로 협력하는 일이 있어서는 안 된다.

그것은 자발적으로 복종해야 한다.

The Christian Life is a Battle

The Christian life is a battle and a march. But the victory to be gained is not won by human power. The field of conflict is the domain of the heart. The battle which we have to fight—the greatest battle that was ever fought by man—is the surrender of self to the will of God, the yielding of the heart to the sovereignty of love. 

The old nature, born of blood and of the will of the flesh, cannot inherit the kingdom of God. The hereditary tendencies, the former habits, must be given up.

He who determines to enter the spiritual kingdom will find that all the powers and passions of an unregenerate nature, backed by the forces of the kingdom of darkness, are arrayed against him. Selfishness and pride will make a stand against anything that would show them to be sinful. 

We cannot, of ourselves, conquer the evil desires and habits that strive for the mastery. We cannot overcome the mighty foe who holds us in his thrall. God alone can give us the victory. 

He desires us to have the mastery over ourselves, our own will and ways. But He cannot work in us without our consent and co-operation. The divine Spirit works through the faculties and powers given to man. Our energies are required to co-operate with God.

The victory is not won without much earnest prayer, without the humbling of self at every step. Our will is not to be forced into co-operation with divine agencies, but it must be voluntarily submitted.
