생각을 제어하는 것이 그대들의 의무이다

그대들의 행위는 그대들에게 비록 은밀한 것이었다고 생각될지라도 하늘 아버지 앞에는 공개되어 있다.

어떤 것도 감추어지지 않으며 가리워지지 않는다.

그대들의 모든 행위와 그 행위를 유발하는 동기는 하나님의 목전에 공개되어 있다.

하나님은 그대들의 모든 말과 생각을 다 아신다.

생각을 제어하는 것이 그대들의 의무이다.

그대들은 헛된 상상을 대항하여 싸워야 할 것이다.

그대들은 생각을 제어하지 않고 자연스럽게 흐르도록 허용하는 일에는 죄가 있을 수 없다고 생각할지 모른다. 

그러나, 그렇지 않다.

헛된 생각에 몰두하는 것에 대하여 그대들은 하나님께 책임을 지게 된다.

왜냐하면, 헛된 생각에서 범죄가 유발되며, 마음에 품었던 것을 실제로 행하기 때문이다.

마음을 지배하라, 그러면, 행위를 지배하기가 훨씬 쉬워질 것이다.

그대들의 생각은 성화될 필요가 있다.

바울은 고린도 인들에게 편지한다.

“모든 이론을 파하며 하나님 아는 것을 대적하여 높아진 것을 다 파하고

모든 생각을 사로잡아 그리스도에게 복종케 하니”(고후 10:5). 

그대들이 이러한 상태에 이르게 되면 헌신의 의미를 더욱 잘 이해하게 될 것이다.

그대들의 생각은 순결하고 정숙하고 고상해 질 것이며, 그대들의 행위는 순결하고 무죄하게 될 것이다.

그대들의 몸은 거룩하고 영광스럽게 보존될 것이요,

그대들은 “몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제사”로 드릴 수 있을 것이다....

인생의 큰 목적을 이루기 위하여,

그대들은 자신만의 쾌락과 즐거움을 추구하는 자들과 하나님을 경외하지 않는 자들의 모본을

따르지 말아야 한다. 

하나님께서는 그대들을 위하여 넉넉한 준비를 하셨다.

하나님께서는, 만일 그대들이 하나님의 말씀에 제시된 조건들을 따르며 세상으로부터 분리된다면,

그대들이 하나님께로부터 힘을 얻으며, 모든 타락케 하는 영향을 제압하고,

고상하고 선하고 숭고한 것들을 계발할 수 있도록 준비하여 놓으셨다. 

그리스도께서는 그대들 속에서 “영생하도록 솟아나는 샘물이”(요 4:14) 되실 것이다.

의지, 지력, 모든 정서는 신앙에 의해 지배될 때 변화시키는 힘을 갖는다.

It Is Your Duty To Control Your Thoughts

All your acts, however secret you may think they have been, are open to your heavenly Father. Nothing is hidden, nothing covered. All your acts and the motives which prompt them are open to His sight. He has full knowledge of all your words and thoughts. 

It is your duty to control your thoughts. You will have to war against a vain imagination. You may think that there can be no sin in permitting your thoughts to run as they naturally would without restraint. 

But this is not so. You are responsible to God for the indulgence of vain thoughts; for from vain imaginations arises the committal of sins, the actual doing of those things upon which the mind has dwelt. Govern your thoughts, and it will then be much easier to govern your actions.

Your thoughts need to be sanctified. Paul writes to the Corinthians: “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5. 

When you come into this position, the work of consecration will be better understood by you both. Your thoughts will be pure, chaste, and elevated; your actions pure and sinless....

In order to answer life’s great ends you must avoid the example of those who are seeking for their own pleasure and enjoyment, and who have not the fear of God before them. 

God has made provisions for you that are ample. He has provided that if you comply with the conditions laid down in His word, and separate from the world, you may receive strength from Him to repress every debasing influence and to develop that which is noble, good, and elevating. 

Christ will be in you “a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:14. The will, the intellect, and every emotion, when controlled by religion, have a transforming power.
