밤중소리

밤중소리

 “신랑이 더디오므로 다 졸며 잘새 밤중에 소리가 나되 보라 신랑이로다 맞으러 나오라 하매

이에 그 처녀들이 다 일어나 등을 준비” 하였다. (마 25:5-7)

 그 기별에는 들뜬 흥분은 없었으나

마음을 깊이 살피고 죄를 자백하며 세속적인 것을 버리게 하는 힘이 있었다. 

주님을 만나기 위하여 준비하는 일이 고뇌하는 영혼들의 마음에 무거운 부담이 되었다.

그들에게는 응답을 받기 전에는 그치지 않는 불굴의 기도와 아낌없는 헌신이 있었다.

마른 땅에 내리는 소낙비와 같이 은혜의 성령이 간절히 구하는 자에게 내렸으며

미구에 저희 주를 대면하여 만날 것을 고대하는 사람들은 말할 수 없는 숭고한 희열을 느꼈다. 

마음을 부드럽게 하고 순하게 하는 성령의 능력이 마음을 녹여

하나님의 영광이 마치 파도처럼 밀려와 충성스럽고 진실한 신자들에게 밀려왔다.

재림기별을 받은 사람들은 조심스럽고 엄숙하게 저희 주를 만나기로 고대하는 시간을 맞이하였다.

매일 아침 그들은 하나님께서 저희를 기쁘게 받으신다는 증거를 얻는 것을 저희의 첫째 의무로 생각했다. 

그들의 마음이 굳게 합하여져서 서로를 위하여 많은 기도를 드렸다.

그들은 자주 하나님과 더불어 교통하기 위하여 은밀한 곳에 모였고

기도 소리가 들과 숲속에서 하늘로 올라갔다. 

저희는 구주의 인정에 대한 확신이 매일의 양식보다도 더 귀하였으며,

만일 마음에 그늘이 덮여 있으면 그것이 사라질 때까지 쉬지 않고 기도하였다.

용서하여 주시는 은혜의 증거를 느끼고 나서야 그들은 사랑하는 주님을 뵙고자 갈망하였다.

The Midnight Cry

“While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.” Matthew 25:5-7.

There was little ecstatic joy, but rather deep searching of heart, confession of sin, and forsaking of the world. 

A preparation to meet the Lord was the burden of agonizing spirits. There was persevering prayer and unreserved consecration to God.

Like showers of rain upon the thirsty earth, the Spirit of grace descended upon the earnest seekers. Those who expected soon to stand face to face with their Redeemer felt a solemn joy that was unutterable. 

The softening, subduing power of the Holy Spirit melted the heart, as wave after wave of the glory of God swept over the faithful, believing ones.

Carefully and solemnly those who received the message came up to the time when they hoped to meet their Lord. Every morning they felt that it was their first duty to secure the evidence of their acceptance with God. 

Their hearts were closely united, and they prayed much with and for one another. They often met together in secluded places to commune with God, and the voice of intercession ascended to heaven from the fields and groves. 

The assurance of the Saviour’s approval was more necessary to them than their daily food, and if a cloud darkened their minds, they did not rest until it was swept away. As they felt the witness of pardoning grace, they longed to behold Him whom their souls loved.
