최고의 명예

“몸은 죽여도 영혼은 능히 죽이지 못하는 자들을 두려워하지 말고

오직 몸과 영혼을 능히 지옥에 멸하시는 자를 두려워하라”(마 10:28).

침례 요한의 운명에 대하여 많은 사람들이 깊은 의구심을 가지고 있다.

왜 요한이 감방에서 신음하다가 죽도록 버림을 받아야 했던가 하고 그들은 묻는다. 

우리 인간적인 통찰력으로는 이 어두운 섭리의 신비를 투시할 수 없다.

그러나 요한이 그저 그리스도의 고난에 참여한 자에 불과하다는 것을 기억할 때에

그것이 우리의 하나님께 대한 신뢰를 결코 흔들 수 없다....

하나님께서는 당신의 백성들이 만일 처음부터 종말까지를 볼 수 있고

하나님의 동역자로서 그들이 성취하고 있는 그 목적의 영광을 식별할 수 있다면

그들이 인도받기를 선택하였을 그 길 이외의 어떤 다른 길로는 결코 그들을 인도하지 않으신다. 

하늘로 승천한 에녹이나 불병거를 타고 하늘로 승천한 엘리야일지라도

결코 옥중에서 외롭게 죽은 침례 요한보다 더 위대하거나 영예를 더 많이 받지는 않았다. 

“그리스도를 위하여 너희에게 은혜를 주신 것은

다만 그를 믿을 뿐 아니라 또한 그를 위하여 고난도 받게 하심이라”(빌 1:29). 

그리고 하늘이 사람에게 주실 수 있는 모든 선물 중에서

그리스도와 더불어 그의 고난에 동참하는 것이 가장 가치 있는 신임이요 가장 높은 영예인 것이다

The Highest Honor

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28. 

To many minds a deep mystery surrounds the fate of John the Baptist. They question why he should have been left to languish and die in prison. 

The mystery of this dark providence our human vision cannot penetrate; but it can never shake our confidence in God when we remember that John was but a sharer in the sufferings of Christ....

God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning, and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as coworkers with Him. 

Not Enoch, who was translated to heaven, not Elijah, who ascended in a chariot of fire, was greater or more honored than John the Baptist, who perished alone in the dungeon. 

“Unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake” (Philippians 1:29). 

And of all the gifts that Heaven can bestow upon men, fellowship with Christ in His sufferings is the most weighty trust and the highest honor.
