믿음은 사랑으로 나타남  

“혹이 가로되 너는 믿음이 있고 나는 행함이 있으니 행함이 없는 네 믿음을 내게 보이라

나는 행함으로 내 믿음을 네게 보이리라”(약 2:18). 

하나님께서 아무리 공의로우시며 그리스도의 공로를 힘입어 죄인을 의롭게 하실 수 있다 할지라도

어떤 인간이든지 자신이 알고 있는 죄를 여전히 행하며 알고 있는 의무들을 등한시하면서

그리스도의 의의 두루마기로 자신의 영혼을 가리울 수는 없다.

사랑으로 역사하지 않고 영혼을 순결케 하지도 못하는 믿음은 어떤 사람도 의롭게 하지 못할 것이다. 

사도는 “이로 보건대 사람이 행함으로 의롭다 하심을 받고 믿음으로만 아니니라”(약 2:24)고 말한다. 

아브라함은 하나님을 믿었다.

그가 하나님을 믿었다는 것을 우리가 어떻게 아는가? 

그의 행함이 그의 믿음의 성격을 보여주었다.

이에 그의 믿음이 의로 여기신 바 된 것이다. 

이 시대에 우리를 에워싸고 있는 어둠을 밝혀 줄 아브라함의 믿음이 필요하다. 

이 어둠이 따사로운 하나님의 사랑의 햇빛을 차단하고 영적 성장을 저해하고 있다. 

우리의 믿음은 선행으로 나타나야 한다. 

이는 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이기 때문이다.

Faith Demonstrated by Works

"Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works." 

-- James 2:18

 While God can be just, and yet justify the sinner through the merits of Christ, no man can cover his soul with the garments of Christ’s righteousness while practicing known sins, or neglecting known duties.

 Faith and works are two oars which we must use equally if we [would] press our way up the stream against the current of unbelief. 

 The so-called faith that does not work by love and purify the soul will not justify any man. 

“Ye see,” says the apostle, “how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.” -- James 2:24.

 Abraham believed God. How do we know that he believed? 

His works testified to the character of his faith, and his faith was accounted to him for righteousness. 

We need the faith of Abraham in our day, to lighten the darkness that gathers around us, shutting out the sweet sunlight of God’s love, and dwarfing spiritual growth.

 Our faith should be prolific of good works; for faith without works is dead.
