전혀 새로운 생애

 “너희는 유혹의 욕심을 따라 썩어져 가는 구습을 좇는 옛 사람을 벗어 버리고

오직 심령으로 새롭게 되어

하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입으라” (엡 4:22-24).

거듭남은 거의 모든 사람들이 깨닫지 못하는 과정이다.

세속적이고 죄를 사랑하는 마음을 변화시켜

그리스도의 말할 수 없는 사랑과 그분의 은혜의 매력과 하나님의 탁월하심을 깨닫게 함으로

영혼이 거룩한 사랑에 젖고 하늘의 신비에 사로잡히게 하는 것은 작은 일이 아니다. 

죄인이 이러한 일들을 이해할 때, 그의 이전 생애는 가증하고 증오스럽게 보일 것이다.

그는 죄를 미워하고 하나님 앞에 그의 마음을 깨뜨리게 되며,

그리스도를 영혼의 생명과 기쁨으로 받아들이게 된다.

그는 이전의 쾌락들을 버린다.

그는 새로운 마음, 새로운 애정, 새로운 관심, 새로운 뜻을 갖는다.

그의 슬픔, 소망, 사랑은 모두 새로운 것들이다... 

한때는 매력없던 하늘이 이제는 풍부하고 영광스럽게 보이며,

그는 그것을 장래의 자신의 집으로 생각하게 된다.

그 곳에서, 그는 보혈로 그를 구속하신 그분을 보고 사랑하고 찬양하게 될 것이다.

괴로운 듯 보이던 성화의 사업이 이제 그의 기쁨이 된다. 

지루하고 흥미없던 하나님의 말씀은 이제 그의 연구 제목으로 선택되고 그의 충고자가 된다.

그것은 영원하신 분의 필체를 담은 하나님께서 그에게 보내신 편지로 여김을 받는다.

그의 생각, 그의 말, 그의 행위가 이 법칙에 대조되고 시험을 받는다.

그는 이 말씀에 담겨 있는 명령과 경고를 인하여 떨지만,

그것의 약속을 굳게 잡으며,

그 약속을 자신에게 적용시킴으로 그의 영혼을 힘있게 한다.

 A New Life Altogether

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24.

Conversion is a work that most do not appreciate. It is not a small matter to transform an earthly, sin-loving mind and bring it to understand the unspeakable love of Christ, the charms of His grace, and the excellency of God, so that the soul shall be imbued with divine love and captivated with the heavenly mysteries. 

When he understands these things, his former life appears disgusting and hateful. He hates sin, and, breaking his heart before God, he embraces Christ as the life and joy of the soul. He renounces his former pleasures. He has a new mind, new affections, new interest, new will; his sorrows, and desires, and love are all new.... 

Heaven, which once possessed no charms, is now viewed in its riches and glory; and he contemplates it as his future home, where he shall see, love, and praise the one who hath redeemed him by His precious blood. The works of holiness, which appeared wearisome, are now his delight. 

The Word of God, which was dull and uninteresting, is now chosen as his study, the man of his counsel. It is as a letter written to him from God, bearing the inscription of the Eternal. His thoughts, his words, and his deeds are brought to this rule and tested. He trembles at the commands and threatenings which it contains, while he firmly grasps its promises and strengthens his soul by appropriating them to himself.
