개개의 영혼을 위한 싸움

타락한 인간은 사단의 합법적인 포로이다.

예수 그리스도의 사명은 사람을 사단의 권세에서 건지는 것이었다.

사람은 나면서부터 사단의 지시를 따르는 경향을 가지고 있다. 

그러므로 위대한 승리자 그리스도께서 인간 속에 계셔서 욕망을 지도하시고 힘을 주시지 않는 한

인간은 혼자 힘으로는 그처럼 무서운 대적을 성공적으로 저항할 수 없다.

하나님께서만 사단의 세력을 제한하실 수 있다. 

사단은 땅을 두루 돌아 여기저기 다니고 있다.

그는 사람을 멸망시키는 기회를 잃을까 두려워하여 단 한 순간도 감시의 눈을 떼지 않는다...

놀라운 방법으로 사단은 나면서부터 그의 지시를 따르려 하는 자들의 신체에 영향을 끼칠 것이다.

사단은 자신이 하나의 가공적(架空的) 존재로 취급을 받는데 대하여 심히 기뻐하는데

그것은 그 자신에게 도리어 이익이 되기 때문이다.

그를 경시하고 또한 그를 어떤 유치한 그림으로나 혹은 어떤 동물로 표현할 때에 그는 가장 만족해 한다. 

사람들은 사단을 심히 저능한 존재로 생각하고 있기 때문에

그들의 마음은 그의 교묘한 계책에 전혀 무방비 상태가 된다. 그러므로 그는 거의 백발 백중으로 성공한다.

만일 그의 능력과 간교함을 이해한다면, 사람들은 그를 성공적으로 저항할 수 있는 준비가 갖추어질 것이다… 

나는 악한 천사들이 영혼들을 탈취하려고 싸우고 있는 것과

하나님의 천사들이 그들을 막고 있는 것을 보았다.

싸움은 맹렬하였다.

악한 천사들은 그들의 주위에 몰려들고 있었으며

그들의 악독한 영향력으로 분위기를 부패시키고 사람들의 감각을 잃게 하고 있었다. 

거룩한 천사들은 열심으로 이 영혼들을 감시하고 있었으며, 사단의 군대를 격퇴하려고 기다리고 있었다.

그러나 각 개인들의 뜻에 반(反)하여 그들의 마음을 통제하는 것은 거룩한 천사들의 일이 아니다.

사람들이 대적에게 항복하고 아무런 저항도 하지 않는다면 그 때에는 하늘 천사들도,

위험에 빠진 자들을 깨우쳐 하늘을 향하여 도움을 구하도록 더 많은 빛이 그들에게 허락될 때까지

사단이 그들을 파멸하지 못하게 사단의 군대를 견제하는 일밖에는 할 수 없다.

예수께서는 거룩한 천사들을 명하여

스스로를 돕기 위하여 아무런 노력을 하지 않는 자들을 구출하라고 명하지 않으실 것이다.

한 영혼을 잃어버릴 위험이 있음을 감지할 때, 사단은 그 한 영혼을 지키기 위하여 필사적으로 노력할 것이다. 그리고 그 사람이 자기의 위험을 자각하고, 그리하여 고뇌와 열심으로써 능력을 얻고자 예수께 의지할 때에

사단은 그의 포로 하나를 잃어버릴까 두려워하며 불쌍한 영혼을 포위하기 위해

그의 사자들의 증원을 요청하며, 하늘 빛이 그에게 이르지 못하도록 그의 주위에 흑암의 장벽을 구축한다. 

그러나 만일 위험 중에 있는 그 사람이 인내하고,

의지 없고 힘 없는 가운데서라도 자신을 그리스도의 피의 공로에 맡긴다면

예수께서는 열렬한 믿음의 기도를 들으시고 그를 구원하기 위하여 더욱 힘센 천사들을 증파하신다. 

사단은 그의 힘센 대적인 예수에게 사람들이 호소하는 데는 견디지 못한다.

이는 그가 그리스도의 능력과 위엄을 두려워하고 그 앞에 전율하는 까닭이다.

열렬한 기도 소리에 사단의 전군이 공포에 질린다. …

그리고 전능한 천사들이 하늘의 병기로 무장을 갖추고 기진 맥진한 채 쫓기는 영혼을 도우려고 나올 때에

사단과 그의 군대는 자기들이 패전한 것을 밝히 알고 퇴각한다.

The Battle for Each Soul

Fallen man is Satan’s lawful captive. The mission of Jesus Christ was to rescue him from his power. Man is naturally inclined to follow Satan’s suggestions, and he cannot of himself successfully resist so terrible a foe, unless Christ, the mighty conqueror, dwells in him, guiding his desires, and giving him strength. God alone can limit the power of Satan. He is going to and fro in the earth, and walking up and down in it. He is not off his watch for a single moment, through fear of losing an opportunity to destroy souls...

In a marvelous manner will he affect the bodies of those who are naturally inclined to do his bidding. Satan exults for his own sake that he is regarded as a fiction. When he is made light of, and is represented by some childish illustration, or as some animal, it suits him well. He is thought so inferior that minds are wholly unprepared for his wisely laid plans, and he almost always succeeds well. If his power and subtlety were understood, minds would be prepared to successfully resist him.... 

I saw evil angels contending for souls, and angels of God resisting them. The conflict was severe. Evil angels were crowding about them, corrupting the atmosphere with their poisonous influence, and stupefying their sensibilities. 

Holy angels were anxiously watching these souls, and were waiting to drive back Satan’s host. But it is not the work of good angels to control minds against the will of the individuals. If they yield to the enemy, and make no effort to resist him, then the angels of God can do but little more than hold in check the host of Satan, that they should not destroy, until further light be given to those in peril, to move them to arouse and look to heaven for help. Jesus will not commission holy angels to extricate those who make no effort to help themselves.

If Satan sees he is in danger of losing one soul, he will exert himself to the utmost to keep that one. And when the individual is aroused to his danger, and, with distress and fervor, looks to Jesus for strength, Satan fears he shall lose a captive, and he calls a re-enforcement of his angels to hedge in the poor soul, and form a wall of darkness around him, that heaven’s light may not reach him. 

But if the one in danger perseveres, and in helplessness and weakness casts himself upon the merits of the blood of Christ, Jesus listens to the earnest prayer of faith, and sends a re-enforcement of those angels which excel in strength to deliver him.

Satan cannot endure to have his powerful rival appealed to, for he fears and trembles before His [Christ’s] strength and majesty. At the sound of fervent prayer, Satan’s whole host trembles.... And when angels, all-powerful, clothed with the armory of heaven, come to the help of the fainting, pursued soul, Satan and his host fall back, well knowing that their battle is lost.
