예수님의 학교에서 배움

참된 예절의 진수는 남을 생각해 주는 마음에 있다.

본질적이고 영속적인 교육은 동정심을 기르고 박애 정신을 조성한다.

소년 소녀들이 그 부모를 공경하게 하고, 부모들의 미덕을 높이 평가하고 그들의 결점을 덮어 주며,

필요할 때 도울 수 있게 하지 못하는 교양, 또는

약한 자와 불행한 사람들에게 동정심을 갖고 부드럽고 관대하게 도와 주도록 하지 못하고

모든 사람에게 예의바르지 못한 소위 그런 교양은 실패인 것이다.

참으로 세련된 사상과 태도는

어떤 일정한 규칙을 지킴으로 얻는 것보다도 하늘에서 오신 교사인 예수님의 학교에서 더 잘 배울 수 있다.

그리스도의 사랑이 마음에 충만할 때, 그 품성은 그리스도의 품성과 비슷하게 연마될 것이다.

이 교육은 하늘이 주는 품위와 예절에 대한 관념을 형성한다.

이것은 표면만이 세련된 유행 사회의 교육과는 도무지 비교할 수 없는

아름다운 성품과 우아한 태도를 주는 것이다.

성경은 예절을 명하고, 참된 예절의 특성인 무아의 정신과 유순한 미덕과

사람의 마음을 끄는 성품에 대한 많은 실례를 보여 준다.

이런 특성들은 다만 그리스도의 품성의 반영에 불과한 것이다.

이 세상에 있는 모든 참된 유화 (柔和) 와 예절은

비록 그것이 그리스도를 모르는 사람들 사이에서 행해지는 일일지라도 그 근원은 그리스도에게 있는 것이다.

그리스도께서는 이런 특성들이 당신의 자녀들에게서 완전히 반영되기를 원하신다.

그리스도께서는 세상 사람들이 우리를 통하여 당신의 아름다움을 보게 되기를 원하신다.

Learning in the School of Jesus

The essence of true politeness is consideration for others. The essential, enduring education is that which broadens the sympathies and encourages universal kindliness.

That so-called culture which does not make a youth deferential toward his parents, appreciative of their excellences, forbearing toward their defects, and helpful to their necessities; which does not make him considerate and tender, generous and helpful toward the young, the old, and the unfortunate, and courteous toward all, is a failure. 

Real refinement of thought and manner is better learned in the school of the divine Teacher than by any observance of set rules.

His love pervading the heart gives to the character those refining touches that fashion it in the semblance of His own.

This education imparts a heaven-born dignity and sense of propriety. It gives a sweetness of disposition and a gentleness of manner that can never be equaled by the superficial polish of fashionable society.

The Bible enjoins courtesy, and it presents many illustrations of the unselfish spirit, the gentle grace, the winsome temper, that characterize true politeness.

These are but reflections of the character of Christ. All the real tenderness and courtesy in the world, even among those who do not acknowledge His name, is from Him.

And He desires these characteristics to be perfectly reflected in His children. It is His purpose that in us men shall behold His beauty.
