무한하신 분과 접촉함

 

기도는 영혼의 호흡이며 영적 힘을 얻는 비결이다. 

다른 어떠한 은사도 기도를 대신하지 못하며 영혼의 건강을 유지하게 하지 못한다. 

기도는 사람의 마음을 생명의 샘이신 그리스도와 접촉하게 하며 영적 경험을 더욱 튼튼하게 한다. 

기도를 게을리하거나 또 형편에 따라, 기도를 가끔 중단하였다 계속 하였다 하면,

하나님께 대한 믿음을 잃게 된다. 

영적 기능은 마비되며, 영적 경험은 원기를 잃고 허약해진다. …

 

우리가 힘있게 기도를 드릴 수 있는 것, 

즉 아무 가치 없는 흠 많은 죽을 인생이 하나님께 구할 수 있는 특권을 가지게 된 것은

실로 놀라운 일이다. 

사람이 무한하신 하나님과 연합하는 일 보다 무슨 더 큰 능력을 바랄 수 있겠는가? 

약하고 죄 많은 인간은 자기의 창조주 하나님께 말할 수 있는 특권을 가졌다. 

우리는 우주를 통치하시는 왕의 보좌에 상달될 수 있는 말을 할 수 있고, 

길을 걸어갈 때에도 예수님과 이야기 할 수 있다. 

예수님께서는 “내가 네 우편에 있노라”고 말씀하신다.

 

우리는 마음속으로 하나님과 교제할 수 있으며 그리스도를 벗삼아 길을 걸을 수 있다. 

우리가 날마다 직무를 행할 때에도 마음속의 소원을 조용히 기도 드릴 수 있으며, 

이 기도가 다른 사람의 귀에는 들리지 않으나

결코 소리 없이 사라지거나 듣지 못하게 되지 않는다. 

 

아무것도 심령의 기도 소리를 막지 못한다. 

그것은 번잡한 거리의 소음과 요란한 기계 소리를 초월하여 위로 올라간다. 

하나님께 향하여 기도하는 것이므로, 우리의 기도는 들으시는 바 된다.

 

 

In Touch with the Infinite

Prayer is the breath of the soul. It is the secret of spiritual power. No other means of grace can be substituted and the health of the soul be preserved. Prayer brings the heart into immediate contact with the Wellspring of life, and strengthens the sinew and muscle of the religious experience. Neglect the exercise of prayer, or engage in prayer spasmodically, now and then, as seems convenient, and you lose your hold on God. The spiritual faculties lose their vitality, the religious experience lacks health and vigor. . . .

 

It is a wonderful thing that we can pray effectually, that unworthy, erring mortals possess the power of offering their requests to God.

What higher power can man desire than this,--to be linked with the infinite God?

Feeble, sinful man has the privilege of speaking to his Maker. We may utter words that reach the throne of the Monarch of the universe. We may speak with Jesus as we walk by the way, and He says, I am at thy right hand.

 

We may commune with God in our hearts; we may walk in companionship with Christ. When engaged in our daily labor, we may breathe out our heart's desire, inaudible to any human ear; but that word cannot die away into silence, nor can it be lost. Nothing can drown the soul's desire. It rises above the din of the street, above the noise of machinery. It is God to whom we are speaking, and our prayer is heard.
