겸손은 존귀의 앞잡이

 

하나님께서 미디안인을 정복하도록 택하신 지도자는

이스라엘 백성 중에서 높은 지위를 차지한 사람이 아니었다.

그는 관원도, 제사장도, 레위인도 아니었다.

그는 스스로 그 아버지의 집에서 가장 작은 자라고 생각한 사람이었다.

그러나 하나님께는 그를 용기와 성실의 사람으로 보셨다.

그는 자신을 불신하고 여호와의 지도를 따르고자 하였다.

 

하나님께서는 항상 당신의 사업을 위해 가장 큰 재능을 가진 자를 택하지 않으시고

당신께서 가장 유용하게 사용할 자를 택하신다.

“겸손은 존귀의 앞잡이니라”(잠 15:33).

주께서는 자신들의 부족함을 가장 절실히 느끼고

당신을 그들의 지도자요 힘의 근원으로 의지할 자들을 통하여 가장 효과적으로 일하실 수 있으시다. 주께서는 그들의 연약함에 당신의 능력을 연합하심으로 그들을 강하게 하시고

그들의 무지에 당신의 지혜를 결합하심으로 그들을 지혜롭게 하실 것이다.

 

참으로 겸손한 마음을 품는다면 주께서는 당신의 백성을 위하여 매우 큰 일을 행하실 것이다. 그러나 하나님을 의지하지 않고 자기를 신뢰하면서 어떤 큰 책임을 맡아 성공할 수 있는 자는 거의 없다.

 

 

Before Honor is Humility

The leader whom God chose to overthrow the Midianites occupied no prominent position in Israel. He was not a ruler, a priest, or a Levite. He thought himself the least in his father's house. But God saw in him a man of courage and integrity. He was distrustful of himself and willing to follow the guidance of the Lord.

God does not always choose for His work men of the greatest talents, but He selects those whom He can best use. "Before honor is humility." Proverbs 15:33. The Lord can work most effectually through those who are most sensible of their own insufficiency, and who will rely upon Him as their leader and source of strength. He will make them strong by uniting their weakness to His might, and wise by connecting their ignorance with His wisdom.

If they would cherish true humility, the Lord could do much more for His people; but there are few who can be trusted with any large measure of responsibility or success without becoming self-confident and forgetful of their dependence upon God.
