아브라함의 시험

아브라함은 남쪽으로 여행을 계속하고 있었는데 그의 믿음은 다시 시험을 당하였다.

 

하늘은 비를 내리지 않고, 시냇물은 골짜기에서 흐르기를 그치고, 들의 풀은 시들었다.

양떼들과 가축떼들은 목초를 얻지 못하였고 기근은 온 장막을 위협하였다.

그 때 그 부조는 섭리의 인도를 의심하지 않았을까?

그는 갈대아 평야의 풍요를 사모하는 마음으로 돌아보지 않았을까?

그에게 고난에 고난이 연속될 때 아브라함이 어떻게 할 것인지를 모두 열심히 주시하고 있었다.

그의 확신이 요동한 것같이 보이지 않는 한, 그들은 희망이 있다고 생각하였다.

그들은 하나님께서 그의 벗이시며 여전히 그를 인도하시고 계신 것을 확신하였다.

 

아브라함은 섭리의 인도를 설명할 수 없었으며 장래의 유업을 실감하지 못하였다.

그러나 그는 “네게 복을 주어 네 이름을 창대케 하리니 너는 복의 근원이 될지라”는 약속을 굳게 붙잡았다.

그는 열심히 기도하며 어떻게 그의 백성과 양떼의 생명을 보존할는지를 생각하였으나,

환경이 하나님의 말씀에 대한 그의 믿음을 뒤흔들도록 허용하지 않았다.

그는 기근을 피하여 애굽으로 내려갔다.

그는 가나안을 저버리거나 궁지에 몰린 나머지 그가 떠나온 갈대아 땅으로 되돌아가지 않았다.

갈대아 땅은 양식이 결핍되는 일은 없었지만 그는 될 수 있는 대로 약속의 땅에서 가까운 곳에

임시로 피난하였다가 하나님께서 그를 두셨던 곳으로 곧 돌아가고자 하였다.

 

주께서 당신의 섭리로 아브라함에게 이 시련을 주신 것은

그에게 순종과 인내와 믿음의 교훈,

곧 나중에 고난을 참도록 부르심을 받을 모든 사람들의 유익을 위하여

기록에 남겨야 할 교훈을 가르치고자 하심이었다.

 

하나님께서는 당신의 자녀들을 그들이 알지 못하는 길로 인도하시나

당신을 신뢰하는 자들을 잊어버리거나 내버리시지 않으신다.

 

그분께서는 욥에게 고통이 이르는 것을 허락하셨으나 그를 버리지 않으셨다.

그분께서는 사랑하는 요한이 외로운 밧모섬으로 귀양가도록 허락하셨으나,

하나님의 아들께서는 그 곳에서 그를 만나셨다. 그리하여 그의 계시는 불멸의 영광된 장면들로 가득 찼다.

 

하나님께서 당신의 백성들이 시련을 당하도록 허락하시는 것은

자신들의 성실성과 순종으로 그들 스스로가 영적으로 부요하게 되며

그들의 모본이 다른 사람들에게 힘의 근원이 되도록 하기 위함이다.

 

“나 여호와가 말하노라 너희를 향한 나의 생각은 내가 아나니

재앙이 아니라 곧 평안이” 라. (렘 29:11)

우리의 믿음을 격렬하게 시험하므로 하나님께서 우리를 버리신 것처럼 보이게 하는 바로 그 시련들은,

우리가 우리의 모든 짐들을 그분의 발 아래 놓고,

그대신 그분께서 우리에게 주실 평안을 경험하도록 우리를 그리스도께로 더욱 가까이 인도하기 위함이다.

 

Abraham’s Trial

 

Abraham continued to journey southward, and again his faith was tested.

 

The heavens withheld their rain, the brooks ceased to flow in the valleys,

and the grass withered on the plains.

The flocks and herds found no pasture, and starvation threatened the whole encampment.

Did not the patriarch now question the leadings of Providence?

Did he not look back with longing to the plenty of the Chaldean plains?

All were eagerly watching to see what Abraham would do,

as trouble after trouble came upon him.

So long as his confidence appeared unshaken, they felt that there was hope;

they were assured that God was his Friend, and that He was still guiding him.

 

Abraham could not explain the leadings of Providence; he had not realized his expectations; but he held fast the promise,

"I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing."

With earnest prayer he considered how to preserve the life of his people and his flocks,

but he would not allow circumstances to shake his faith in God's word.

To escape the famine he went down into Egypt.

He did not forsake Canaan, or in his extremity turn back to the Chaldean land

from which he came, where there was no scarcity of bread;

but he sought a temporary refuge as near as possible to the Land of Promise,

intending shortly to return where God had placed him.

 

The Lord in His providence had brought this trial upon Abraham

to teach him lessons of submission, patience, and faith--

lessons that where to be placed on record for the benefit of all

who should afterward be called to endure affliction.

 

God leads His children by a way that they know not,

but He does not forget or cast off those who put their trust in Him.

 

He permitted affliction to come upon Job, but He did not forsake him.

He allowed the beloved John to be exiled to lonely Patmos, but the Son of God met him there, and his vision was filled with scenes of immortal glory.

 

God permits trials to assail His people,

that by their constancy and obedience they themselves may be spiritually enriched,

and that their example may be a source of strength to others.

 

"I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord,

thoughts of peace, and not of evil." Jeremiah 29:11.

The very trials that task our faith most severely and make it seem that God has forsaken us,

are to lead us closer to Christ,

that we may lay all our burdens at His feet and

experience the peace which He will give us in exchange.
