한없는 사랑

LIMITLESS LOVE

Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. -Psalm 36:5

Recently, a friend sent me the history of a hymn that I often heard in church when I was a boy: Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made, Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade; To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry; Nor could the scroll contain the whole Though stretched from sky to sky. These words are part of an ancient Jewish poem and were once found on the wall of a patient’s room in an insane asylum. Also, Frederick M. Lehman was so moved by the poem that he desired to ex-pand on it. In 1917, while seated on a lemon box during his lunch break from his job as a laborer, he added the words of the first two stanzas and the chorus, completing the song “The Love of God.” The psalmist describes the comforting assurance of God’s love in Psalm 36: “Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens” (v.5 ESV). Regardless of the circumstances of life-whether in a moment of sanity in a mind otherwise muddled with confusion or during a dark time of trial-God’s love is a beacon of hope, our everpresent, inexhaustible source of strength and confidence. -Joe Stowell

여호와여 주의 인자하심이 하늘에 있고 주의 진실하심이 공중에 사무쳤으며-시편 36:5

최근 친구 하나가 우리가 어렸을 때 교회에서 종종 들었던 찬송가에 얽힌 이야기를 보내왔습니다. 하늘을 두루마리 삼고 바다를 먹물 삼아도 한없는 하나님의 사랑 다 기록할 수 없겠네 하나님의 크신 사랑 그 어찌 다 쓸까 저 하늘 높이 쌓아도 채우지 못하리 이 가사는 고대 유대의 시 가운데 일부인데 정신병원의 한 병실 벽에서 발견되었습니다. 또한, 프레데릭 레만이 이 시에 매우 감동을 받아 그 시에 좀 더 덧붙이고 싶은 마음이 들었습니다. 1917년 노동자로 일하던 그는 어느 점심시간에 레몬 상자 위에 앉아 첫 두 연과 후렴 부분을 더하여 “그 크신 하나님의 사랑”이라는 찬송을 완성했습니다. 시편기자는 시편 36편에서 하나님의 사랑에 대해 마음 든든히 확신하며 “주님의 한결같은 사랑은 하늘에 가득 차 있고”(5절, 새번역)라고 썼습니다. 정신이 온전하든지 혼란스럽든지, 아니면 시련으로 힘겨운 때이든지, 우리 삶의 어떤 형편에도 상관없이 하나님의 사랑은 희망의 불빛이며, 언제나 우리와 함께하면서 다함이 없는 힘과 신뢰의 원천이 됩니다.

하나님 크신 사랑은 측량 다 못하며 영원히 변치 않는 사랑 성도여 찬양하세

당신이 받고 있는 사랑은 영원한 사랑이다.
