잠잠하라 고요하라

예수께서 잠에서 깨어 폭풍을 대하셨을 때 그분은 극히 평온하셨다.

그분의 마음에는 두려움이 없었으므로 말이나 표정에 두려워하시는 기색이 없었다.

그러나 그분께서는 당신이 가지신 전능하신 능력에 의뢰하지 않으셨다.

그분께서 조용히 쉬신 것은 “땅과 바다와 하늘의 주”의 입장에서 하신 것이 아니었다. 그 능력을 그분은 버리셨던 바 “내가 아무것도 스스로 할 수 없노라”(요 5：30)고 말씀하셨다. 그분께서는 하늘 아버지의 능력에 의뢰하셨다.

예수께서 쉬신 것은 믿음 곧 하나님의 사랑과 돌보심을 믿는 믿음 안에서였으며

폭풍을 잔잔하게 한 그 말씀의 능력은 하나님의 능력이었다.

 

예수께서 믿음으로 아버지의 보호 안에서 쉬신 것처럼

우리도 구주의 보호 안에서 쉬어야 한다.

제자들이 그분을 의뢰하였다면 저들은 평강 가운데 있었을 것이다.

 

위기를 당했을 때 저희의 두려움은 그들의 불신을 드러내 주었다.

그들은 자신을 구원하려고 노력하는 중에 예수님을 잊었다. 그리고

그분께서 저희에게 도움을 주실 수 있었던 것은

저희가 자아 의뢰의 절망에서 그분께로 돌아갔을 때뿐이었다.

 

우리는 얼마나 흔히 제자들과 같은 경험을 하는가!

시험의 태풍이 점점 거세지고 번갯불이 무섭게 번쩍거리며 파도가 우리를 덮칠 때

우리는 우리를 도우실 수 있는 분이 계심을 잊어버리고 홀로 폭풍과 싸운다.

우리의 희망이 사라지고 멸망 직전에 빠질 때까지 우리는 자신의 힘을 의뢰한다.

 

그 때에야 우리는 예수님을 기억한다.

그러나 만일 우리를 구해주시도록 그분께 요청한다면 우리의 부르짖음은 헛되지 않을 것이다. 그분께서는 우리의 불신과 자아 신뢰를 슬프게 책망하시지만

우리가 요청하는 도움을 주지 못하는 일이 결코 없으시다.

 

육지든 바다든 우리가 구주를 마음속에 모시고 있다면 두려워할 필요가 없다.

구주께 대한 산 믿음이 인생의 바다를 잔잔하게 할 것이요,

그분께서 가장 좋다고 생각하는 방식으로 우리를 위험에서 건져내실 것이다.

 

 

Peace, Be Still

 

When Jesus was awakened to meet the storm, He was in perfect peace. There was no trace of fear in word or look, for no fear was in His heart. But He rested not in the possession of almighty power. It was not as the "Master of earth and sea and sky" that He reposed in quiet. That power He had laid down, and He says, "I can of Mine own self do nothing." John 5:30. He trusted in the Father's might. It was in faith--faith in God's love and care--that Jesus rested, and the power of that word which stilled the storm was the power of God.

As Jesus rested by faith in the Father's care, so we are to rest in the care of our Saviour. If the disciples had trusted in Him, they would have been kept in peace. Their fear in the time of danger revealed their unbelief. In their efforts to save themselves, they forgot Jesus; and it was only when, in despair of self-dependence, they turned to Him that He could give them help.

How often the disciples' experience is ours! When the tempests of temptation gather, and the fierce lightnings flash, and the waves sweep over us, we battle with the storm alone, forgetting that there is one who can help us. We trust to our own strength till our hope is lost, and we are ready to perish. Then we remember Jesus, and if we call upon Him to save us, we shall not cry in vain. Though He sorrowfully reproves our unbelief and self-confidence, He never fails to give us the help we need. Whether on the land or on the sea, if we have the Saviour in our hearts, there is no need of fear. Living faith in the Redeemer will smooth the sea of life, and will deliver us from danger in the way that He knows to be best. – Desires of Ages, 336.
