성령이 사람의 마음에 역사하시는 것

니고데모가 여전히 갈피를 잡지 못하고 있을 때 예수께서는 그 뜻을 예증하기 위하여 바람을 사용하셨다. “바람이 임의로 불매 네가 그 소리를 들어도 어디서 오며 어디로 가는지 알지 못하나니 성령으로 난 사람은 다 이러하니라.”

잎사귀와 꽃을 살랑거리게 하면서 바람은 나뭇가지 사이에서 들리나 눈에 보이지 않아서 그것이 어디서 오며 어디로 가는지 아무도 알지 못한다. 성령이 사람의 마음에 역사하시는 것도 이와 같다. 바람의 움직임을 설명할 수 없는 것처럼 이것도 설명할 수 없다. 어떤 사람이 회심의 과정을 확실한 시간이나 장소를 대어 말할 수 없고 그 모든 환경들을 자세히 추적할 수 없다 해도 이것이 그가 회심하지 않았다는 증거가 되지는 못한다. 그리스도께서는 바람과 같이 보이지 않는 힘으로 사람의 마음에 끊임없이 역사하고 계신다. 받는 사람이 혹 의식하지 못할지라도 조금씩 영혼을 그리스도께로 이끌리게 하는 감명이 이루어진다. 이러한 감명들은 그분을 명상함으로나 성경을 읽거나 실제로 목사의 말을 들음으로 받을 수도 있다. 갑자기 성령께서 더욱 직접적인 호소를 하실 때에 그 영혼은 기쁘게 자신을 예수께 바친다. 많은 사람들은 이것을 가리켜 갑작스런 회심이라고 하지만 사실 그것은 하나님의 성령의 오랜 구애 곧 꾸준하고도 지속적인 과정을 거쳐서 호소하신 결과인 것이다.

바람 그 자체는 눈에 보이지 않지만 보고 느낄 수 있는 결과를 드러낸다. 그와 같이 영혼에게 역사하시는 성령의 활동도 그 구원하는 능력을 체험한 사람의 모든 행위 가운데서 나타나 보일 것이다. 하나님의 성령이 사람의 마음을 사로잡을 때 생애가 변화된다. 죄악적인 생각은 사라지고 악한 행위와는 인연을 끊게 된다. 사랑과 겸손과 화평이 분노와 시기와 분쟁을 대신한다. 기쁨이 슬픔을 대신하고 용모는 하늘의 빛을 반사한다. 아무도 짐을 덜어 주는 손을 보지 못하며 빛이 하늘 조정에서 내려오는 것도 보지 못한다. 사람이 믿음으로 자신을 하나님께 바치는 때에 복이 임한다. 그 때에 인간의 눈으로는 볼 수 없는 능력이 하나님의 형상대로 새로운 피조물을 창조하는 것이다. – 시대의 소망, 172-3.

The Work of the Holy Spirit upon the Heart

Nicodemus was still perplexed, and Jesus used the wind to illustrate His meaning: "The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit."

The wind is heard among the branches of the trees, rustling the leaves and flowers; yet it is invisible, and no man knows whence it comes or whither it goes. So with the work of the Holy Spirit upon the heart. It can no more be explained than can the movements of the wind. A person may not be able to tell the exact time or place, or to trace all the circumstances in the process of conversion; but this does not prove him to be unconverted. By an agency as unseen as the wind, Christ is constantly working upon the heart. Little by little, perhaps unconsciously to the receiver, impressions are made that tend to draw the soul to Christ. These may be received through meditating upon Him, through reading the Scriptures, or through hearing the word from the living preacher. Suddenly, as the Spirit comes with more direct appeal, the soul gladly surrenders itself to Jesus. By many this is called sudden conversion; but it is the result of long wooing by the Spirit of God,--a patient, protracted process.

While the wind is itself invisible, it produces effects that are seen and felt. So the work of the Spirit upon the soul will reveal itself in every act of him who has felt its saving power. When the Spirit of God takes possession of the heart, it transforms the life. Sinful thoughts are put away, evil deeds are renounced; love, humility, and peace take the place of anger, envy, and strife. Joy takes the place of sadness, and the countenance reflects the light of heaven. No one sees the hand that lifts the burden, or beholds the light descend from the courts above. The blessing comes when by faith the soul surrenders itself to God. Then that power which no human eye can see creates a new being in the image of God. – Desires of Ages, 172-3.
