LOVE AND SUPPORT

I thank my God . . . for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now. -Philippians 1:3,5

I received this note from a friend serving in an orphanage in a developing country: “Yesterday, as I was sitting at my office desk, I noticed a trail of ants on the floor. As I followed it, I was shocked to see that thousands of ants had blanketed the walls of our office building-inside and out. They swarmed everything. Fortunately, one of the workers . . . set to work. Less than an hour later, the ants were gone.” After telling this insect story, my friend wrote, “So, how was your day at work?” Sometimes we need reminders of the needs of those who have left behind the comforts and conveniences of home. God calls each of us to different paths of service, and some paths are bumpy. Working in an office that is overrun by ants doesn’t appeal to anyone, but my friend is not there for the perks. She and many other believers have had their hearts captured by Christ and think that abandoning “essential” comforts and conveniences is a small thing to do to honor Him who loves us. They need our support in the way Paul depended on his friends in Philippi-for fellowship (Phil. 1:5), for finances (4:16), and for care (4:18). When we encourage our friends who have left their familiar environments to serve God elsewhere, we show our love for the one who sent them. -Dave Branon

Dear Lord, give me wisdom to know which of Your workers in the fields of the world need my help. Show me how my family can surround them with encouragement and support.

The glory of life is to love, not to be loved; to give, not to get; to serve, not to be served.

나의 하나님께 감사하며…첫날부터 이제까지 복음을 위한 일에 참여하고 있기 때문이라-빌립보서 1:3,5

어느 개발도상국의 고아원에서 봉사하고 있는 친구로부터 다음과 같은 글을 받았습니다. “어제 사무실 책상에 앉아 있는데 바닥에 줄지어가고 있는 개미를 보게 되었어요. 그걸 따라가 보다가 우리 사무실 건물 벽 안팎을 온통 뒤덮고 있는 엄청난 개미떼를 보고 충격을 받았어요. 어디에나 다 개미들이 득실거리고 있었어요. 다행히 직원 한 사람이 퇴치작업을 시작하여 한 시간이 지나지 않아 개미들이 사라졌어요.” 이 벌레 이야기를 다 마치고서 친구는 “그래, 오늘 일은 어땠어요”라고 물었습니다. 때때로 고국의 편안함과 편리함을 뒤로 하고 외국으로 떠난 사람들에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지를 누군가가 우리에게 상기시켜주면 좋겠습니다. 하나님은 우리를 각각 다른 봉사의 길로 부르시는데 어떤 길은 험난합니다. 개미로 뒤덮인 사무실에서 일하는 것을 좋아할 사람은 아무도 없지만, 내 친구는 무슨 혜택을 얻고자 해서 거기 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그녀뿐 아니라 다른 많은 신자들이 그들의 마음이 그리스도께 사로잡혀 있기 때문에, 그들은 우리를 사랑하시는 주님께 영광을 돌리기 위해서라면 “꼭 필요한” 편리함마저 버리는 것조차도 작은 일이라고 생각합니다. 바울이 빌립보의 친구들에게 교제(빌 1:5)와 금전적인 도움(4:16)과 돌봄(4:18)을 기대했던 것처럼, 그들에게도 우리의 지원이 필요합니다. 낯선 곳에서 하나님을 섬기기 위해 친숙한 환경을 떠난 친구들을 격려할 때에 그들을 보내신 분에 대한 우리의 사랑이 드러납니다.

사랑하는 주님, 세상에 있는 당신의 일꾼 중에 누가 저의 도움이 필요한지 알 수 있도록 지혜를 주십시오. 어떻게 하면 제 가족이 그들을 격려와 지원으로 감쌀 수 있을지 보여주십시오.

영광스러운 삶은 사랑받는 것이 아니라 사랑하는 것이고, 가지는 것이 아니라 주는 것이며, 섬김 받는 것이 아니라 섬기는 것이다.
