바라봄으로 변화됨

바라봄으로 변화되는 것은 지성적 본성의 법칙일 뿐 아니라 영적 본성의 법칙이기도 하다.  

사람의 마음은 숙고하도록 허락된 사물에 점차적으로 적응된다.

그러므로 마음은 습관적으로 사랑하고 존경하는 것에 동화된다.

사람은 자신의 순결과 양선과 진실의 표준 이상으로 향상할 수 없다.

자아를 자신의 최고의 이상으로 삼는다면 그는 자기 이상의 표준에 결코 도달할 수 없다.

오히려 그는 점점 더 퇴보되어 갈 것이다.

하나님의 은혜만이 사람을 향상시키는 능력을 가지고 있다.

자기 자신만을 신뢰하면 그는 필연적으로 퇴보할 수밖에 없다.

By Beholding We Become Changed

It is a law both of the intellectual and the spiritual nature that by beholding we become changed. The mind gradually adapts itself to the subjects upon which it is allowed to dwell. It becomes assimilated to that which it is accustomed to love and reverence. Man will never rise higher than his standard of purity or goodness or truth. If self is his loftiest ideal, he will never attain to anything more exalted. Rather, he will constantly sink lower and lower. The grace of God alone has power to exalt man. Left to himself, his course must inevitably be downward.-- GC 555 (1888).
