좁은 길을 가고 있는 자들

좁은 길을 가고 있는 자들은 그들이 여행 끝에 가질 기쁨과 행복에 대하여 이야기하고 있다.

그들의 얼굴은 가끔 슬픈 빛을 띠나, 자주 거룩하고 성스러운 빛으로 빛난다.

그들은 넓은 길에 있는 무리처럼 옷입거나 말하거나 행동하지 않는다.

그들에게는 한 분의 모본이 주어져 있었다.

간고를 겪으신 자요 질고를 아는 자께서 그들을 위하여 그 길을 여셨고, 친히 그 길로 걸어가셨다.

그분을 따르는 자들은 그분의 발자취를 보고 위로와 기쁨을 얻는다.

그분께서는 안전하게 지나가셨다. 그러므로 그분의 발자취를 따르는 한,

그들 역시 안전하게 지나갈 수 있다...

 

왜 극기와 겸손의 생애가 그처럼 어려운가?

그 이유는 그리스도인으로 공언하는 자들이 세상에 대하여 죽지 않았기 때문이다.

사실상, 우리는 죽으면 살기가 쉽다. 그러나 많은 사람들은 애굽의 파와 마늘을 그리워하고 있다.

그들은 할 수 있는 대로 세상 사람들처럼 옷을 입고 행동하고자 하는 마음을 가지고 있으면서도

하늘에 가고 싶어한다. 그들은 다른 길을 걸어가고 있다.

그들은 좁은 문과 좁은 길로 들어가지 않는다.

 

이러한 사람들은 아무 변명도 할 수 없을 것이다.

많은 사람들은 영향력을 나타내기 위하여 세상 사람들처럼 옷을 입는다.

그러나 그들은 여기서 슬프고도 치명적인 실수를 범한다.

 

만일, 그들이 진실하고 구원하는 감화를 끼치려면,

그들의 신앙 고백을 실천하고,

그들의 의로운 행위를 통하여 그들의 믿음을 나타내고,

그리스도인과 세상 사람과의 구별을 뚜렷하게 해야 한다.

 

나는 말과 의복과 행동이 하나님을 위하여 말해야 한다는 것을 보았다.

그렇게 할 때, 거룩한 감화가 모든 사람에게 미치게 되고,

그들이 예수님과 함께 있었다는 사실을 알게 될 것이다.

불신자들은 우리가 공언하는 진리에 거룩한 감화가 있다는 것과,

예수님의 재림을 믿는 믿음이 남녀의 품성에 영향을 미친다는 것을 깨닫게 될 것이다.

 

어떤 사람이든지 그들의 감화력이 진리를 위하여 영향력을 발휘하게 하고자 하면,

그들은 그 진리를 실천함으로 겸손한 모본자를 본받아야 한다.

Those who travel in the narrow way

 

Those who travel in the narrow way are talking of the joy and happiness they will have at the end of the journey. Their countenances are often sad, yet often beam with holy, sacred joy. They do not dress like the company in the broad road, or talk like them, or act like them. A Pattern has been given them. A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief opened that road for them, and traveled it Himself. His followers see His footsteps and are comforted and cheered. He went through safely; so can they, if they follow His footsteps...

Why is it so hard to lead a self-denying, humble life? Because professed Christians are not dead to the world. It is easy living after we are dead.

But many are longing for the leeks and onions of Egypt. They have a disposition to dress and act as much like the world as possible, and yet go to heaven. Such climb up some other way. They do not enter through the strait gate and narrow way....

Such will have no excuse. Many dress like the world to have an influence. But here they make a sad and fatal mistake. If they would have a true and saving influence, let them live out their profession, show their faith by their righteous works, and make the distinction great between the Christian and the world. I saw that the words, the dress, and actions should tell for God. Then a holy influence will be shed upon all, and all will take knowledge of them that they have been with Jesus. Unbelievers will see that the truth we profess has a holy influence, and that faith in Christ’s coming affects the character of the man or woman. If any wish to have their influence tell in favor of the truth, let them live it out, and thus imitate the humble Pattern. – Messages to Young People, 125-8.
