만일 성경이 마땅하리만치 연구된다면, 사람들의 지성은 강해질 것이다.
하나님의 말씀에 다루어진 주제들, 그 말씀의 위엄 있는 단순성, 그것이 마음에 제시하는 고상한 주제들을 통해 달리는 계발될 수 없는 기능들이 계발된다.
성경에는 상상력을 동원해야 할 무한한 분야가 열려 있다.

학생들은, 장엄한 주제들을 명상한 후에, 고상한 심상들과 교제한 후에 하찮은 성격의 것들에 대해서는 말할 나위도 없고, 단순히 인간이 만든 작품들 중 그 어느 것을 읽는 데 시간을 보냈을 때보다도 사상과 느낌에 있어서 더욱 순결하고 고상하게 될 것이다.

원기 왕성한 청년의 마음은 지혜의 최고의 근원인 하나님의 말씀을 등한히 할 때에 가장 고상한 계발을 달성하지 못하게 된다.
건전한 마음과 견실한 마음 그리고 견실한 가치를 지닌 사람이 그렇게도 적은 이유는 하나님을 두려워하지 않고 하나님을 사랑하지 않고 신앙의 원칙들이 마땅하리만치 생활 속에서 실천되지 않기 때문이다.

성경 자체가 그렇게 말하다시피 성경은 우리의 안내자가 되어야 한다.
성경 연구만큼 마음을 넓혀 주고 지성을 강화시켜 주는 데 적합한 것은 없다.
어떤 연구도 살아 있는 말씀의 연구처럼 영혼을 향상시켜 주고 기능들에 원기를 줄 수 없다....

마음이 위축되거나 확대되는 것은 그것이 친숙하게 되는 것들의 성격에 달려 있다.
만일 마음이 성경을 성경과 비교함으로써 진리를 이해하기 위하여 노력하는 일에 원기 왕성하고, 끈질긴 노력을 하는 데 쓰여지지 않는다면, 그것은 분명히 수축되고 그 정상적인 상태를 상실하게 될 것이다.
우리는 직접적으로 표면에 드러나지 않는 진리들을 찾는 일에 마음을 기울여야 한다.

?Aroma of Life | Search for Its Hidden Treasure?

If the Bible were studied as it should be, men would become strong in intellect.
The subjects treated upon in the Word of God, the dignified simplicity of its utterance, the noble themes which it presents to the mind, develop faculties in man which cannot otherwise be developed.
In the Bible a boundless field is opened for the imagination.

The student will come from a contemplation of its grand themes, from association with its lofty imagery, more pure and elevated in thought and feeling than if he had spent the time in reading any work of mere human origin, to say nothing of those of a trifling character.

Youthful minds fail to reach their noblest development when they neglect the highest source of wisdom—the Word of God.
The reason why we have so few men of good mind, of stability and solid worth, is that God is not feared, God is not loved, the principles of religion are not carried out in the life as they should be.

The Bible, just as it reads, is to be our guide.
Nothing is so calculated to enlarge the mind and strengthen the intellect as the study of the Bible.
No other study will so elevate the soul and give vigor to the faculties as the study of the living oracles....

It is according to the character of the matter with which the mind becomes familiar that it is dwarfed or enlarged.
If the mind is not raised up to make vigorous and persistent effort in seeking to comprehend truth by comparing scripture with scripture, it will surely become contracted and lose its tone.
We should set our minds to the task of searching for truths that do not lie directly upon the surface.
