?생명의 향기 | 하나님의 은혜로 성화된 이성이 생애를 지배해야 한다?

 

고상한 품성은 우연의 결과가 아니며

하나님의 섭리의 특별한 은총이나 거저 주심에 의한 것도 아니다.

이것은 자기 수양과 고귀한 품성을 위하여 비천한 성질을 버리는 것과

하나님과 인간에게 봉사하기 위해 자신을 포기하는 일의 결과이다.

 

히브리 청년들이 보여 준 절제 원칙에 대한 충실함을 통하여

하나님께서는 오늘날의 청년들에게 말씀하시고 계신다.

다니엘처럼 담대히 바른 주장을 이행할 사람들이 필요하다. 

 

순결한 마음, 강한 손, 두려움을 모르는 용기가 필요하다.

이는 악과 선 사이의 투쟁에는 끊임없는 경계가 요구되는 까닭이다.

사탄은 모든 영혼들로 하여금 식욕에 방종하도록 하기 위하여

여러 가지 형태의 유혹을 가지고 시험한다.

 

몸은 품성의 건설을 위하여 마음과 정신을 계발시키는 가장 중대한 매개물이다.

그러므로 영혼의 원수는 체력을 약하게 하고 퇴화시키는 데 그의 유혹을 주력한다. 

 

이 점에서 그가 성공했다는 의미는 때때로 전 존재가 악에 굴복당했다는 뜻이다. 

육체적 성향이 보다 높은 능력의 지배를 받지 않는 한 분명히 파멸과 죽음을 초래할 것이다. 

 

육체는 보다 높은 능력에게 복종하여야 한다.

정욕은 의지의 지배를 받아야 하며 의지 그 자체는 하나님의 지배 아래 있어야 한다.

하나님의 은혜로 성화된 이성이 생애를 지배해야 한다. 

 

지력과 체력과 수명은 불변의 법칙에 의존된다.

이 법칙에 순종함으로 인간은 자신을 정복하고

자신의 기호(嗜好)와

"정사와 권세와 이 어둠의 세상 주관자들과 하늘에 있는 악의 영들"(엡 6:12)을 정복할 수 있다.

A noble character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence. It is the result of self-discipline, of subjection of the lower to the higher nature, of the surrender of self to the service of God and man.

 

Through the fidelity to the principles of temperance shown by the Hebrew youth God is speaking to the youth of today. There is need of men who like Daniel will do and dare for the cause of right. 

 

Pure hearts, strong hands, fearless courage, are needed; for the warfare between vice and virtue calls for ceaseless vigilance. To every soul Satan comes with temptation in many alluring forms on the point of indulgence of appetite.

 

The body is a most important medium through which the mind and the soul are developed for the upbuilding of character. Hence it is that the adversary of souls directs his temptations to the enfeebling and degrading of the physical powers. 

 

His success here often means the surrender of the whole being to evil. The tendencies of the physical nature, unless under the dominion of a higher power, will surely work ruin and death. 

 

The body is to be brought into subjection to the higher powers of the being. The passions are to be controlled by the will, which is itself to be under the control of God. The kingly power of reason, sanctified by divine grace, is to bear sway in the life.

 

Intellectual power, physical stamina, and the length of life depend upon immutable laws. Through obedience to these laws, man may stand conqueror of himself, conqueror of his own inclinations, conqueror of principalities and powers, of “the rulers of the darkness of this world,” and of “spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12.
