엘리야는 낙담을 거절함

 “일곱 번째 이르러서는 저가 고하되 바다에서 사람의 손만한 작은 구름이 일어나나이다 가로되

올라가 아합에게 고하기를 비에 막히지 아니하도록 마차를 갖추고 내려가소서 하라 하니라”(왕상 18:44).

엘리야의 경험으로부터 우리에게 주어지는 중대한 교훈들이 있다.

갈멜산 위에서 그가 비를 구하는 기도를 드렸을 때,

그의 믿음은 시험을 받았지만 그는 그가 원하는 것을 하나님께 탄원하면서 인내하였다. 

여섯 번이나 그는 열렬한 기도를 드렸지만 그의 간구가 받으신 바 되었다는 증거는 하나도 없었다.

그러나 그는 강한 믿음을 가지고 그의 탄원을 은혜의 보좌 앞으로 올렸다.

만약 그가 여섯 번째쯤 가서 용기가 꺾여 포기해 버렸더라면 그의 기도는 응답받지 못하였을 것이었다. 

우리는 우리의 기도에 귀를 기울이고 계신 하나님을 모시고 있다. 만약 우리가 그의 말씀을 믿고 실험해 보면 그분은 우리의 믿음을 받으시고 응답해 주실 것이다. 

그분은 우리가 그분의 이익과 우리의 모든 이익을 한데 섞어 짜기를 바라신다.

그렇게 하면 그분은 우리를 안전하게 축복하실 수 있다.

왜냐하면 그 축복이 우리의 것이 되었을 때에

그 영광을 우리들 자신에게 돌리지 않고 모든 영광을 하나님께 돌릴 것이기 때문이다. 

하나님께서는 우리가 드린 첫 번째 기도에 반드시 응답하시는 것은 아니다.

만약 하나님께서 그렇게 하시면

그분이 우리에게 내려 주시는 모든 축복과 은총을

당연히 받을 권리나 가진 것처럼 생각할 수도 있을 것이기 때문이다.

Elijah Refused to Be Discouraged

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. 1 Kings 18:44.

Important lessons are presented to us in the experience of Elijah. When upon Mt. Carmel he offered the prayer for rain, his faith was tested, but he persevered in making known his request unto God. 

Six times he prayed earnestly, and yet there was no sign that his petition was granted, but with a strong faith he urged his plea to the throne of grace. Had he given up in discouragement at the sixth time, his prayer would not have been answered.... 

We have a God whose ear is not closed to our petitions; and if we prove His word, He will honor our faith. 

He wants us to have all our interests interwoven with His interests, and then He can safely bless us; for we shall not then take glory to self when the blessing is ours, but shall render all the praise to God.

God does not always answer our prayers the first time we call upon Him; for should He do this, we might take it for granted that we had a right to all the blessings and favors He bestowed upon us.
