즐거운 것을 바라보는 데 달려 있다

만일, 그대가 하나님께서 이행하도록 주시고 하나의 의무로서 그대에게 분부하신 바를 이룰 것 같으면,

그대는 행복한 가정을 갖게 될 것이다.

그러나, 주님께서는 그대에게 하도록 맡겨 주신 일을 그대를 대신하여 하지는 않으실 것이다. 

C 형제는 동정을 받을 만하다.

그는 너무 오랫동안 불행을 느껴 왔기 때문에 생애가 그에게 짐이 되어 버렸다. 

그러나, 사실상 그렇게 될 필요는 없다.

그의 상상력이 병들고, 그의 눈이 너무 오랫동안 어두운 면을 주시해 왔기 때문에,

그가 만일 역경에 부딪치거나 실망을 당하게 되면, 그는,

모든 것이 파괴적이요 궁핍을 당하게 될 것이며, 모든 것이 자기를 대적하고,

누구보다 자기가 어려움을 겪고 있다고 상상함으로써 자신의 생애를 비참하게 만든다. 

이렇게 생각하면 할수록 그는 자신의 생애와 그의 주변에 있는 모든 사람의 생애를 더욱 불행하게 만든다.

그가 그렇게 생각할 이유는 없다. 모든 것이 사단의 역사이다.

그는 자신의 마음을 그렇게 지배하도록 허용해서는 안 된다. 

그는 어둡고 우울한 장면 대신에

자비로운 주님과, 하늘의 영광과, 겸손하고 순종하고 감사한 마음으로 하나님의 약속을 믿는

산 믿음을 가진 모든 사람들을 위하여 준비된 풍성한 유업을 바라보아야 한다. 

이 일에는 그에게 노력과 투쟁이 요구될 것이다. 그럴지라도, 그 일은 이루어져야 한다. 

그대의 현재의 행복과 미래의 행복, 영원한 행복은 그대의 마음을 상상에서 오는 어두운 장면에서 돌이켜

즐거운 것,

하나님께서 그대의 길에 온통 뿌려 놓으신 은혜,

그리고 그것들 저편에 있는 보이지 않는 영원한 것들을 바라보는 데 달려 있다.

Fixing Mind upon Cheerful Things

You can be a happy family if you will do what God has given you to do and has enjoined upon you as a duty. But the Lord will not do for you that which He has left for you to do. 

Brother C deserves pity. He has so long felt unhappy that life has become a burden to him. 

It need not be thus. His imagination is diseased, and he has so long kept his eyes on the dark picture that if he meets with adversity or disappointment, he imagines that everything is going to ruin, that he will come to want, that everything is against him, that he has the hardest time of anyone; and thus his life is made wretched. 

The more he thinks thus, the more miserable he makes his life and the lives of all around him. He has no reason to feel as he does; it is all the work of Satan. He must not suffer the enemy thus to control his mind. 

He should turn away from the dark and gloomy picture to that of the loving Saviour, the glory of heaven, and the rich inheritance prepared for all who are humble and obedient, and who possess grateful hearts and abiding faith in the promises of God. This will cost him an effort, a struggle; but it must be done. 

Your present happiness and your future, eternal happiness depend upon your fixing your mind upon cheerful things, looking away from the dark picture, which is imaginary, to the benefits which God has strewn in your pathway, and beyond these, to the unseen and eternal.
