인류의 가장 큰 결핍은 인물의 부족이다.

 

 

그 인물이란

매매되지 않는 사람, 심령이 진실하고 정직한 사람,

죄를 그대로 죄라고 부르기를 두려워하지 않는 사람,

마치 나침반의 바늘이 틀림없이 남북을 가리키듯이 양심이 그 의무에 충실한 사람,

비록 하늘이 무너질지라도 옳은 일을 위하여 굳게 서는 그런 사람들이다.

 

그러나, 이런 품성은 우연히 형성되는 것이 아니다.

이것은 하나님의 무슨 특별한 은혜나 천분(天分)으로 되는 것도 아니다.

 

고상한 품성은

극기와, 저급한 성품을 버리고 고매한 성품을 가지려는 노력의 결과,

곧 하나님과 사람에게 사랑의 봉사를 하기 위해 자아를 내어 맡기는

자기 수련의 결과이다.

The greatest want of the world is the want of men—men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.

 

But such a character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence.

 

A noble character is the result of self-discipline,

of the subjection of the lower to the higher nature—

the surrender of self for the service of love to God and man.
